A few years back, but I just walked in to the nearest auto-electrician and asked him to fix it - same day, no comments on problems with parts, but was fairly expensive.

I just had mine reconditioned, new brushes, bearing and diode, 12 months warranty included for $330.00

The guy who did mine said he had trouble finding the bearing, apparantly tried 20 suppliers before locating one.I can forward his number if you are nearby.

Any dimensions on that bearing?
One of my businesses is supplying seals and bearings for mountainbikes. You wouldn't believe the number of non-standard or just plain odd sized bearings that bikes take.

Cost me $220 bucks to get mine reconditioned a couple of months ago.

G'day Steady, If you know what is wrong with it and don't have access to part numbers, take the cactus bit in to Ashdowns or silimar electrical auto wholesaler. Usually they have non genuine replacements for just about everything to do with starters/alternators. It will help if you write down the make of alternator and any numbers that are on it. What type of alternator do you have, 40Amp,70 Amp, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Nippondenso, internal or external regulator?. Lots of brands fitted to these motors.:(
