Finally finished the drawer system off, really happy with it! All up including all stainless fittings etc it has cost me about $400 Aussie to build from scratch and the drawer can hold up to 90 kg!
More mods coming next week so stay tuned!!! :D

That's not very "pov" at all Povman. In fact it's decidedly unpov! Nice.

great job,
looking to do the same to mine, to store my clutter, where did you get the fittings to assemble the frame?

Thanks fellas, I got the alloy tube steel and fittings from bunnings, then I cut some plate galv and riveted all the joins with 4mm rivets to strengthen the whole frame.
By the way, it only weighs about 12kg in total and it's totally removable in about 2 mins!

Wish I had seen yours a couple of weeks ago, mine cost me $1200 and weighs in at about 60kg. I think my Puma now weights more than my sons D3.

It looks really good - it's always satisfying not to have to fork out a couple of grand on what's effectively a big drawer. I see you've used the Qubelock stuff - how resilient do you find it??

Nice Job.
The trick is to get the draw to fit well with the door.
Well done.

A job well done!

I have a proprietary system in mine and have found that it is so much easier to pack the Defender and get to stuff when it is packed.

I like the lift up bit. :D

Very professional looking job povman, I'd ask you for the measurements but considering all Defs are different it probably wouldn't help, would it. You've made me feel slack but I should feel motivated instead! Ok, I do, breaking out the hacksaw now :)

Probably mine , as I was in Perth for the week. Was it close the entrance of multi level long term ? If so it was mine.

Good job on the drawers, infortunately , the Billy lids requier the two rear seats in mine , so Im stumped for space. They really take up alot of space.

Hi Povman,

The drawer system looks fantastic.

I habve aquestion about your lift up section. Would it have been easier to include a door next to your slide out drawer when the rig is packed? Wikll you store your fridge on the passenger side and loose items on the Drivers so you can gain reletively easy access? What items are you planning to store in there?

Cheers Chris

G'day guys, thanks for all the positive feed back...
To answer a few questions..

Qubelock stuff - how resilient do you find it??
Now that I've reinforced Qubelock with galv sheet metal and 4mm rivets on EVERY join, shes tough enough to have my 70 kg lying on it no problem. The top ply is 19mm thick. I also cut lengths of ply to wedge in between the lateral lengths which gives it the most strength in a downward direction.
I've made it such a snug fit that I don't get any rattling and I don't need to lock the drawer itself!

POV: beaut job how much downward force can it withstand ?

Short answer is, no worries...Haven't dragged the missus up there yet but if I fold down the back seats and put a blow up mattress on there it's an easy 1 night accom option!

What you can't see in these pics is, I built in a fail safe!!! What I mean is, the front of the drawer closes over the front of the flip up section and all I have to do is pull the carpet, and the front panel comes off, allowing me access to the section from the front when fully loaded on top!! In that section I am going to have my stuff in long containers so I can slide them out..
Big reply I know but when I get my girl back from ARB next week I'll post some better pics for you! I am going to store the fridge on the passenger side too hence the tie downs I built into the top!

Cheers,
Povman.

Very nice povman. If you dont mind me asking what are you using as runners for the draw and where did you pick them up from? I've been meaning to redo my system in the back for a while now but I cant find any reasonably priced draw runners. Pinched some server rails from work (they were to be binned) but took them back as they felt like they'd rattle around too much.

Wow

So my version is a domestic door cut in halves and sat across the wheel arches, on bits of foam rubber to stop rattles, two under-bed storage crates without lids beneath and a bit of non-slip matting on top.

I've been planning to improve it for about a year now.....always thought it would be too hard....not any more.

Have you done a ceiling console at the front? I had planned to do that next but have been afraid to start pulling the trim off in case I snap a retaining clip or whatever.

Thanks for the inspiration!:)

G'day stuee, I got the runners off ebay for $70. They slide out 700mm and can take 90 k/g of weight on them. There are a few different designs but I went for the flat ones that screw directly to your frame to give me more drawer space.
Check here and I'm sure you'll find something suitable. drawer slides, Cars, Bikes, Boats, Home, Jewellery items at low prices on eBay.com.au (http://shop.ebay.com.au/i.html?_nkw=drawer+slides)

Chops110, I've been thinking about a roof console for a while, I can't imagine it being to difficult to knock one up but I'm running out of time before the big trip in August so it might have to wait till we get back! Still have to install and wire up the uhf yet!
Cheers,
Povman.

Hi Povman. Thanks heaps for the design. I have blatantly stolen it. I did build mine all from 15mm ply. Comes up a treat with the carpet. Hides a multitude of woodworking sins! I got a pair of Haffle drawer slides to finish the job off nicely.

Im just about to finish my draw system. Any tips on applying the marine carpet?

Andy_Chil
27th May 2013, 07:16 AM
It was remarkably easy to apply the carpet. I did the following:

Cut each piece with a 40mm overhang and also trimmed the corners.
Applied contact adhesive to both the ply and carpet using a paint spray gun. Needs to be quite thick. Don't bother with spray cans. I would think a paint brush would do??
Applied the carpet and smoothed out using a heavy roller. A kitchen rolling pin would do the job.
Fold the edge up and secured with staples. I used heaps.
Hope this helps.

rar110,

This is a great design from Povman and I too stole it accordingly....credit where credit's due! The long section on the right is superb for keeping long tools and fishing rods in.

To apply the carpet, I cut it exactly to size and used some pretty standard carpet adhesive which I got from Bunnings. I didn't bother carpeting around the edges as the carpet I had was too bulky so I would have lost space. Instead I used some aluminium L-plate and screwed that down onto the carpet.

The final touch for me was to get some thin ply and make dividers for the drawer as I found that everything gets jumbled up too easily...but it depends what you're going to use it for

Andy,

Nice job on the drawer mate. I see you used 15mm ply, I'm assuming you used that for the top as well. Do you get any flex from the top deck at the open end when you load it up or kneel on it getting gear in or out.

I'm trying to determine what might be the best thickness for an 'open' type setup with 4 wolf boxes under it. I will have a central support between the wheel boxes running front to back, but with 12mm I still get flex, hence why I'm asking about 15mm.

Thanks

Mick

Hi Mick,

The 15mm seems to be fine. The longest span with open front on mine is about 700mm and I can sit on top without any issue.
Good luck with your project!

G'day Andy

Thanks for the quick reply. My span is only @450 - 460mm so 15mm should be good.

Thanks mate

Hey guys,

Looking to build one of these systems myself.

How have you anchored them down so they don't tip up when the drawer is extended?

Cheers

Just finished mine the other week too - same design! Marine carpet, etc

Used 19mm ply which i found is good for heavy loading on top (fridge, kids, etc.), but my span was more like 600mm

Will post pics once i take some

Good effort from everyone :)

Whilst i was at it I added some LED strip lighting to the inside - should make a huge difference when camped up and rummaging for the bottle-opener

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/11/379.jpg

Much more usable space... milk crates fit nicely under the irritating (but necessary) CRAB bar

Wired in a couple of extra 12V sockets too... for fridge/chargers etc

Hello Mick

I used 18mm ply from memory and it still flexes a little with no support in the middle. I have photos in the members rides of the 4 wolfpack boxes underneath.
