hey i am about to do another big order but the place that i am getting them from at melbourne does not have the steering for my s1 so a few questions
i have heard that the steering arms and tie rods are the same right throughout the series's?
where can i get parts for the steering column at the front of the chassis?
what should i expect to replace in the steering besides the tie rod ends?
also i have noticed that the defender uni joints are exact if not very similar to the s1 uni joints.can anyone else confirm this?
oh the place is fwd spare parts.so if anyones here knows someone there that would be great
i think i have asked this before but i will ask again the 80inch s1 swivels are different arn't they?

You do know that the place in Kotara where you did your work experience can supply most if not all the things you will get in Melbourne!
The parts inside the steering relay (except for the thrust washers) are interchangeable, you can use a late model series relay in any S1.
The biggest problem on an 80" is the steering box. If you have a worm and bronze nut type (5 start, triangular thread), really the only place to get it done is to send the whole box to London. Many later 80" were fitted or retrofitted with a steel nut with a worm with only 2 square threads this is a more reliable type which tends to wear far less.
No the steering arms are not the same right through the series.: There is a different degree of "crank" on the lower steering relay lever for pendant and non-pendant type swivel levers.
The track rod and drag links are different lengths for S1 and S2/S2a/S3, S2b are different again.
S1/S2/S2a/S2b use shouldered tie-rod ends, S3 use a non-shouldered tie-rod end where the thread extends the full length to the stop. The two types ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE (Even though some suppliers have superseded the early shouldered type to the late part number. These suppliers are wrong and the practice is dangerous!).The Uni joints on the Disco are probably a different size, although the later series vehicles used the same uni-joint as Ford Falcon and F100, which if bought as a Ford part cost about half that of the Rover part.
On the swivels. There are differences. The S1 will usually have a bronze cone, splined pin and spring for the top swivel bearing. You can retrofit it to the Railco Bush type (which may already have been done), the Railco bush and pin are the same as the early S2 type.
You can use any of the later series model chrome swivel balls on an 80", but you can not use an original 80" ball on a vehicle with spicer joint halfshafts.
The big seal is the same on all models.

i have heard that the steering arms Interchangeable, but not the same. Up to you whether it matters.
and tie rods are the same right throughout the series's? Tie rods and drag links are shorter on the S1 because of the narrower track, and there was a change in thread type (see below) in S3 production. Also, there was a change in the drag link when the steering damper was factory fitted.
where can i get parts for the steering column at the front of the chassis? By this I assume you mean the steering relay. These are interchangeable on all Series Landrovers (except Stage 1) and can be sourced from any Landrover specialist. Do not attempt to disassemble one unless you know exactly what you are doing, as it has a very powerful spring that can cause serious injury.
what should i expect to replace in the steering besides the tie rod ends? You should check the swivels (a good case for updating to the Railko type - not sure you can for 80") and the steering box. Note that tie rod ends are not the same on all Series Landrovers. During S3 production there was a change from tie rod ends with an unthreaded section, which the tie rod clamps on to, to ones threaded the full length. These are not interchangeable and must not be used with the wrong type of tie rod. If you do, you have a smooth surface clamped against a threaded surface, and this is not secure, and has led to fatal accidents.
also i have noticed that the defender uni joints are exact if not very similar to the s1 uni joints.can anyone else confirm this? Size of U-joints changed during Defender production, but they are basically the same, and the early Defender ones are the same as the Series ones.
oh the place is fwd spare parts.so if anyones here knows someone there that would be great
i think i have asked this before but i will ask again the 80inch s1 swivels are different arn't they?
The early swivels used Tracta CV joints, and have quite a few differences from later ones. The change to cross and bearing universal joints instead of CV joints was, however, during 80" production, about 1952, from memory. From this change, the next change, during S2 production, was to move the steering arm to the bottom rather than the top of the swivel, and about the same time change from cone friction bearings to a railko bush, but these changes can be made to earlier ones, although not easily to the Tracta joint ones from memory.

yeah i would sooner use a different place then what you reccomended though thanks anywayYour choice, I get good service from Kotara and there are a lot of people I would use before I went to Melbourne to buy things. Even the usual suspects in the UK Dunsfolds/Craddocks/LR Series/PA Blanchard get my vote before Blackburn South gets my custom.

I concur,
Peter at Kotara and his staff are second to none.
But when I restored my landie back in the late ninety's, the only place available was the dreaded Melbourne mob and I found them very helpful none the less.

<snip>I deleted the original post which breached the name and shame rule.
I also deleted the innappropriate (name and shame) part of the quote used in your reply. Otherwise your reply, which wasn't a problem wouldn't have made sense.
However, if the line I snipped from your quoted post was directed at me, you are very close to being infracted for personal attack.

AULRO IS NOT THE PLACE TO WHINGE ABOUT DEALERS, REPAIRERS OR SOMEONE YOU THINK HAS WRONGED YOU. whilst you may think it a good thing to warn your mates about something or someone you feel has done you wrong, doing so in a public forum not only exposes you to possible legal action, it also exposes the system to such risks. there are dedicated sites on the net that specialise in that type of post, eg Not Good Enough - Australia's Customer Complaints Website :: Home (http://www.notgoodenough.com.au) , please use them. by all means praise those that do the right thing by you in the areas already provided.
--------------------------------------------------------
Now the group here in the series forums are generally a great bunch of people to chat and share information with, however we must also abide with the rules of AuLRO. Personal Attacks on other members will not be tolerated.
There is a language (swear) filter in operation, this is because not everyone on AuLRO is an Adult. If you are worried about a word DON'T USE IT, but don't try to avoid the filter either. The board will automatically turn unacceptable words into *****s if you use a bunch of other characters you may find you cop demerit points for the avoid the swear filter.
Play the ball not the man. In this case the issue rather than ball.
Everyone posting on this forum is a member, it doesn't matter if they are Australian, a Brit, Spanish, Calathumpian, Martian, man, woman nor child. They all deserve respect whether they have a lot of Land Rover knowledge or none at all, treat them the way you would like to be treated yourself.
Some questions need not be asked, just like some of them deserve not to be answered.
And finally just like on the sporting field THE UMPIRES DECISION IS FINAL. If you don't like it, report it to the administration using the report button. DO NOT POST GRIPES IN OPEN FORUMS.

After that it is Dunsfold's, John Craddock or P.A. Blanchard in the U.K.
Some parts you will find next to impossible to find. For those you need to go to Ian Cox from Cox N Turner engineering in the U.K.

Addit Just looked at your earlier post re: axles. Very few people do metal spraying these days. If it is a semi floating axle you have and don't have one of the very early 80" (which you want to keep very original) all the semi floating axles are interchangeable with each other. Your best bet is to look for a good second hand pair from wrecks.
