blitz

As the Rover V8 is a buick, or originated from there; what other manufacturers use it?
Just curious to see what others have done to the engine i.e. supercharged it or if there is a more powerful version out there beyond what landrover have done with it?
I looking for inspiration and a proven way to get more power out of the old girl.

I seem to remember that the Land Rover 101 is missing from the list
regarding a subsequent post. Yes the Olds did use the same block but had a different crank and firing order. Both of them didn't last in production for very long.
A V6 cast iron version continued in the Buick line and subsequently that engine line was where the Holden Commodore V6 came from.

Wasn't it virtually the same engine as the one used by Oldsmobile?
Sir Jack Brabham used one to win the Formula 1 championship in 1966-7.
So they must have a fair bit of potential. :p
That should give you something to aim for. :D

Allan, it was the Repco Brabham, they used the block, the heads were and still are useless, known as the nail head under Buick, Regards Frank.

Real power and a Rover V8 are/ am a oxymoron . The only engine that makes any real power are the JAG/Ford engines fitted to the latest Crop . By the time you buy a fit decent set of heads, a 4bolt conversion , pinned liners and a after market ECU engine management system , that will be well over $10000 , plus Huffer or puffer for another $5000 at least , all just to make as much power as say a standard LS2 CHEV motor , why bother , stick with the Clunker !!!

Do you ever have anything good to say? All i ever see in your threads are how **** Rover motors are. This guy has asked a specific question. All you do is give negative feedback about it.And yes we all know how good your motor is.It makes 400 hp on gas. And mine makes 600 on gas.:D :D

Triumph StagWasn't that a cast iron engine not developed or built by Buick/Rover?
It was always a critiscism of British Leyland that they didn't coordinate very well having different plants building similar items and not benefiting from the "ecconomies of scale" the most oft used example is the Rover 3.5 V8 and the Triumph Stag 3 V8

Allan, it was the Repco Brabham, they used the block, the heads were and still are useless, known as the nail head under Buick, Regards Frank.
The nail head was Buick's own cast iron V8. You can pick them by the vertical rocker covers. The Oldsmobile version of the BOP aluminum V8 family had an extra row of head studs between the cylinder bores. This is why Phil Irving picked this version for the Repco-Brabham engine.

Stags came out with a 3 litre V8.
Their own engine, ****** troublesome and useless. Often replaced by a Rover or Chev. Strangely, Stags with the original engine are now worth more than those that had the trouble removed.

Stags came out with a 3 litre V8.
And not related to the Rover V8 - was an internal Triumph desighned engine. Originally at 2.5 litres for the sedan then ended up as 3 litre. In theory a better design than the Rover V8 with OHC but in reality had major problems.

Hi Diana, I was always told that the 3.5 V8 used in the MGB GT?
(I could have been misled :o)

(I could have been misled :o)Yes it was used in the MGB (as Tusker suggests) but no I don't have the engine prefix.

Do you ever have anything good to say? All i ever see in your threads are how **** Rover motors are. This guy has asked a specific question. All you do is give negative feedback about it.And yes we all know how good your motor is.It makes 400 hp on gas. And mine makes 600 on gas.:D :D
I could have gone down the chev engine road but I want to keep it as original as I can - by saying original I mean using bits off of other engines heads cams blower etc to produce the maximum reliable power from engines that have a common ancestory

And is the Leyland P77 engine related to the buick/rover V8?

And is the Leyland P77 engine related to the buick/rover V8?Absolutely the P76 and Terrier Truck V8 are related to the Rover V8, in fact when Leyland Zetland plant were having problems with slipped liners, some of the 4.4 blocks were cast by Rover in the UK until they sorted the problem out.
You can use Rover V8 heads on P76 blocks and even the rocker covers are interchangeable.

The older iron block Commodore V6 is a cousin. Its a buick V8 minus 2 pots.

Does anyone know how many V8's were made by Rover? GM made 180,000 of them in the few years they produced them.

The one that seems to be missing from the list (unless I missed it) is the Morgan +8.

A slight correction. Triumph Stag V8 engine was developed from 4 cyl 1998cc TR7 engine, not 2500 sedan. If it was it would have been a V12. I have Disco V8 and a TR7, and it always amazes me how the V8 was designed to fit the TR7. Especially when you park them alongside each other.

What about the Westfield Seight. A very light car designed for 4 pots but the V8 had to happen and what else but a light, tuned rover V8. Staggering power to weight ratio but not much good in the wet.
The Stag V8 was a design using the Dolomite engine which was a canted over overhead cam 4 pot. The Dolomite Sprint even had a 16 valve head, way ahead of its time but alas the uk car industry didn't develop and manufacture cars quite as well as they could of. The TR7 came along after.
I would say though TVR has to be the mob that pushed the Rover engine hardest.
It was also the hot rodders favourite in the UK.

And not related to the Rover V8 - was an internal Triumph desighned engine. Originally at 2.5 litres for the sedan then ended up as 3 litre. In theory a better design than the Rover V8 with OHC but in reality had major problems.
Garry
The triumph 2.5 is an L6 not a V8, the sedan never had a V8.
The stag V8 is a single crankcase that has 2 individual 4 cyl blocks mated together and was prone to serious overheating hence why they were replaced with 4.4 or 3.5 V8s or chev/ford small blocks.

I never said the 2.5 V8 went into the sedan. The V8 was originally designed to be 2.5litres (two 1.2 litre slant 4 engines joined) and to go into the sedan but it never got there and the 2.5 V8 did not get past early prototype stage. As you indicated, Triumph decided to go the 2.5 6cylinder in the sedan and the V8 was taken out to 3 litres to go into the Stag.
Interesting the V8's problems were fixed not by Triumph - but by enthusiasts and and aftermarket developers. Solutions were found to the heating and other issues (either by parts or maintenance procedures) to the point that the 3 litre is now quite reliable and a Stag with the original engine is worth far more than one with Rover V8.
