hi all
im in the market for a new defender soon, being an ex toyota and pootrol owner its been ingraned into me that LR'S arent all that reliable,
also the stats for the defender 110 says it get 11L to the 100 km, is that accurate? as the toyota 76 series 4.5L tdv8 claims to be the same.
what are the pros and cons of a new 110 or 90, ive seen that they are very capable but i want the ins and outs of everything before i part with $50 000.
cheers

Toyota claim a lot about their economy... and im amazed they havent been sued yet. they must do their testing downhill with a tail wind and engine off!
I did some extensive brake testing in the V8 79 series ute.. i would be surprised if i was getting 18l/100k's read other reports on how thirsty that engine is.. its almost as bad as the petrol. I also found that the engine was gutless it was more sluggish than the 4.2 patrol i was testing too..
i think you'll find all of toyota range have similar questionable economy figures...

The one my son has does around 10 to 11l/100k all the time, normal type driving.Vacum pump failed,as they all seem too, apart from that, not much has happened.
Laeves his mates 80 series for dead in the rough stuff,& isn't that far behind his other mates 4.2 TD tray back with 2" lift & dual lockers.
I know a guy with a tray back 79 series who can't get better than 14l/100k,& he drives it real easy.
You need to take one for a test drive & see what you think,as they are a lot different than a Tojo or a Patrol.
Most of the problems,i think, were on the earlier one's.

Hi Joel
I find that 4.5 litre consumption a little staggering, I've just traded my TD5 in for the current 2.4 Wagon in which I averaged 10.5 L/100 for ten years and it didn't make a lot of difference what the driving conditons were, though I am a careful driver, and so far I'm very pleased, mind you I was pleased with the TD5, though a lot of the little changes actually make a big difference, I suggest you keep and open mind, drive them both to suck it and see.

Mate of mine had one of the first 100 series. Major work done two head jobs. Engine rebuild and at the end a full wraped in plastic engine replacement.
The cruser had 6 months warranty to go when the "new" motor went in and Toyota refused to give him any further warranty on the motor.
Another mate had a brand new 80 series. Took it to stockton on a LR club day and the radiator boiled much to our delight.
It took three trips to toyota to fix the radiator. Eventually they found it was 60% blocked with metal filings from the factory.
