The good oil???

Can anyone recommend the correct engine oil to use on a D3 (TDV6).
On the weekend decided to check the oil level & found it needed a top up. After reading the manual and doing a web search I got 2 different options. As it is a 2008 model the recommended weight is Castrol Edge-Sport 0W-30 and for 2005-2007 Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30. There are more brands but I wanted to stick with LR approved. What can other forum users suggest. Can I void warranty if I use this 0W-30 grade even though Castrol recommend yet the manual states 5W-30? Is it that serious? I understand other threads regarding the transmission oil is critical but the engine?

Not sure wherre to go with this one, the oil grade is sometimes specified based on climatic conditions, a manufacturer could base the decision on where the most of one particular vehicle is sold, I don't know. In older handbooks the vehicle manufacturer you used to get a viscocity range based on the average ambient temperature.
Me I use a fully synthetic 10W-40 in my TDV6, for me this has been fine, in my opinion I'm sure others will vary you are far more likely to have engine failure problems related to either under filled or an over filled sump, unless you use something way outside the recommended viscocity range you should be OK, if you use something like a 75W 90 or a 90W-140 weight oil good luck, you deserve everything you get.
Heavier weighted oil creates a higher DP across your filter, lighter weight oil depending on additives can have a lower film strength. lubrication is a very complex and depending on what "floats your boats" very interesting subject, very much open to opinion and folk law. If you find a good oil stick to it, maintain the correct level and change at the recommended interval using an OEM filter, one of my own personal rules is always use the correct oil filter from the manufacturer of the vehicle. If your engine fails and you have a non OEM filter installed you are more than like going to be open to a lot more scrutiny than using a 10W-40 instead of a 5W-30 if you know what I mean.
