View Full Version : V8 Exhaust, what a note

Hi fellers,
After wanting to change the exhaust on my rangie and putting it off an off and off a recent scrub trip crushed the back muffler, it made my mind up "it's time to change the exhaust".
So i took it down to Mr muffler at sumner park and asked for a custom system, to make it sound like a real v8.
The end result is more than i could have hoped for ans it now sounds like a bigger v8. I also got a dumpy made up for future scrub trips so i wont crush it again. Undo 3 bolts, bolt on the dumpy and the exhaust is dumped at the diff.
The video doesn't do it justice but you get the idea.
Cheers

Hate the noise.
That would drive me bonkers in no time!

Love the Noise... If you're feeling creative I've love to hear what it sounds like inside the Car with the Windows Closed....
I love a Good Exhaust note... but not all the time...
If it's quiet enough at 100kmh on the Highway, but loud under revs ete... then I'd be interested to do the same to mine...

That sounds great! Very similar to a big old carby fed Chev!
Is it a 2 1/2" system the whole way through or bigger?

No. It doesn't sound like the nice throb of an American V8 - it's just like it has no muffler and that's not a good sound.
I wonder what the coppers will think.

If you're going to pay for all the fuel a 4WD burns, you might as well bloody hear it.
I've got a similar note after an upgrade and while it's not everyone cup of tea, a big sound brings a smile to most faces. Good thing with the P38 is that it's only loud when the revs are up, meaning you have some control and restraint when needed...
I'd love to see how the bolts and removal works, i need that on mine, any pics??

Sounds ok, it does have a similar sound to a carby fed Chev.
There is a facebook P38 Group, in the Video section there are a few vids of a P38 playing in some sand that sounds a lot like yours.

I went for a 2 1/2" system from the Y pipe back with a single straight through muffler. It's got a little lump at idle and while putting around town it's not obnoxious in the slightest. The BigHorn tyres make more noise. In low range up a hill at full tilt though, it makes quite the noise... I'll try and get some video/audio of stationary and under load.
Also, I thought my system would too loud for the boys in blue, but after a trip to the pits, the inspector said it was well within the limits. In WA though I think it's something crazy like 95dB @ 30m

Keels.

have a look at my photobucket.... a few vids on there.... the county has a heartbeat that attracts hoons, police and young ladies....
factory EFI headers, std manifold pipe and about 12" after it leaves the manifold it becomes 2" then joins for a 2.5" all the way thru with a muffler in the center...
As my motor is not stock when the cam starts to roll over the growl becomes a crackle under load..... so being an auto... hills tend to get loud...
Had a few boys in blue tell me it is loud and my charm has got me off each time...... one even told me as loud as it is. It sounds great...
even had a few car buffs ask what chev it is....
"No boys, its a stock 3.5" ;)

now that there is a few ks through the system the crackle has gone and its a smoother note, the muffler has finally burnt in.
its got a 16" muffler on it still but no idea what sort and a 2 1/2" mandrel system.
As for driving normally you still know it's there but it's not in your ear constantly, there is no longer any burbling or popping on full decel and when you are on light cruise you can barely hear it. It's also been slightly re routed to be further away from the rear tyre.
I'l get some pic's up of the back section and the dumpy on it in the next day or so and an in car vid.

I got it for mates rates off a friend if mine. Bout for that system you could expect around the 1g mark, keeping in mind I got another 3 flange points added so you can change any point if you hit it and it's also a custom system, all hand made no bolt on's. :o

I got my system from the extractors back fitted for around $450. All good quality stuff too. 2.5 inch all the way. The Y-pipe is a pain to make apparently. You can hear it in the link below:
YouTube- Land Rover Discovery hill climb
The engine is now in my 110 with essentially the same exhaust system but with a different Y pipe and everything has been portmatched and ported nicely. I'll post some new stuff soon. Just as a note is is worth converting your vids to youtube for bandwidth reasons and also because it views faster. Ive also made $5 from youtube for my Disco rollover vid. Woohoo :BigThumb:

Well funnily enough one of my cat's has recently dropped its heat shield/guard and is rattling annoyingly so I am now looking at exhaust repairs Vs upgrade.
Ideally, I would like performance and aural improvements (with out getting into the "look at me" territory). I am currentlky inclined to stay with a single system (but perhaps increase flow by upping diameter to 2.5 or 3 inch) and also following the standard path/layout where possible, with facility to attach Lambda sensors in standard locations and perhaps have a removable rear section to limit off road damage...
Anyone got suggestions about Melbourne based suppliers in the "value" budget bracket (i.e. not necessarily the cheapest, but the best value equation)? Saw someone mentioned in this post previously they only shelled out $400-500 for their new one... and that would be a great price bracket for my budget!
Also, anyone interested in me then trying to organise a bulk buy discount? Assuming we can agree on product and can find someone wanting to participate.

My D2 V8 recently developed a crack in the y piece and also around the inlet side of the front muffler, so I decided it was time to make it sound better.
I took it to Performance exhausts in Ringwood (can highly reccomend them) and for $600 I now have a 2 1/2 inch straight through stainless system, with a turbo muffler at the front and a small straight through hot dog type rear muffler. Sounds quietish at low speed/idle (which is what I wanted) but really good at 2-2500 rpm, and at 100k's you can't hear it in the car. Mates following me in the bush reckon it sounds awesome.

Dave, both of my cats are missing their heat shields, just rip them off. They dont really do THAT much (as in, I haven't had any problems related to the heat shields missing). The system I put on was around $300 fitted, and that was a new system from the Y pipe back with only one muffler, so didn't go near the cats. If your cats are actually busted, you'll be looking at around that PER CAT for generic ones, plus the system. If the cats are still working, just sans shields, leave it untill it does bugger out :angel:

I bit the bullet and had a cat-back system made for my rangie a few weeks ago! I ended up going with a 2 1/2" and a single muffler setup! It sounds great! The only time it's annoyingly loud is between 95 and 105km/h, every other speed it's quiet enough in-car to be pleasantly noticed! I'll take a pic one of these days as it's quite unique! I told old-mate to tuck it up nice and high as I use my car off road and would like the system to stay intact! From the rear of the car about 4m away you can only just see the exhaust tip! Pointed down in the factory direction! I'm happy!
It sounds virtually the same as my old 5 litre VR commodore with a twin system did!

I wouldnt be happy with an exhaust if it was loud/droned between 95/105....i thought they were meant to be designed to reduce noise at these speeds!!??!!

Thanks Keels. Funny, I actually did just rip it off... if it wasn't for the crappy tinny rattle that emits from it now, I normally wouldn't even worry about it... but what a ****ty noise it is If it can be sorted I will be going for cat back... if not, I may have to see if I can sort a decent late model 2nd hand cat... maybe Andy E has a nice stainless system lying around somewhere! I would like to try and help free it all up a bit too... standard singles always sound a bit strangled to me. Either way I'll do some proper research and quoting a bit later this week.
Any others in for a bulk buy?

Its more RPM related... If it was sitting at 2000RPM at 100km/h it'd be fine, unfortunately i'd have to buy Paul's lift kit and Arnott's airbags and fit bigger tyres to change that :-p For now I'm happy to cruise at either 90km/h or 106km/h! It's not deafening, just louder at those speeds! Can still whisper to each other! Still quieter than my torana is at idle!

With my 33"s on, I'm still doing 2600-2700 at 110kph (via GPS, approx 95-100 on speedo). Must be the 4.1 diff ratios...
the dual exhaust is a touch on the noisy side but doesn't drone... more of a reassuring rumble that the mice are doing their job ;)

If you kept the standard gearing what revs do you think you'd be sitting at on the 33's at 100km/h Paul? I believe that mine is revving too high at the mighty dollar! I'd probably change my low range ratio if i went 33's, but leave the high range as it is!
Do you know if it's possible to correct the speedo with bigger tyres on? Would my faultmate be able to do this maybe??

i reckon you'd get it down to the 2200-2300rpm range but you'd also go too fast downhill in low range with standard diff gearing. I do like the idea of changing the transfer case low range gearing only.
you can get a speedo correction unit for the bigger tyres that hooks in to the ABS sensor i believe. I have found nothing in the FaultMate that allows it to be set via software though.

Mine sits at 2250rpm at 100km/h now with factory tyre size! I'd hope it would drop if I wacked another 4" of tyre under the guards :-p My Torana changed by about 6km/h (at 100km/h indicated on speedo) when i went from stock 13" skinny's to bigs-n-littles, and the tyre size at the rear went up by about 2"!
I'll be visiting the Hard Range website frequently for the next few months while I decide exactly what I should treat myself to for Christmas!

If you kept the standard gearing what revs do you think you'd be sitting at on the 33's at 100km/h Keithy
I was bored at work so did some maths.
Using these three tyre sizes
1. Standard 29" tyre (standard P38 size) - 2.318m circumference
2. 30.5" tyre (Mine) - 2.442m circumference
3. 33" tyre (Paul's) - 2.639m circumference
At 100km/h with standard gearing it should work out to be:
29" = 2253rpm
30.5" = 2139rpm
33" = 1979rpm
With 4.11 diffs like Paul has it should be:
29" = 2616rpm
30.5" = 2483rpm
33" = 2298rpm
The figures aren't exact as tyre diameters vary from brand to brand, tread to tread (muddies tend to be bigger than road tread) etc but gives a good ballpark. Personally I wouldn't go to 33's unless you regeared the diffs too, accelleration and hills would suffer too much I reckon. First gear low wouldn't be slow enough either for good descent control. I notice it already on mine and I've only got 30.5's
edit: 4.11 or 4.1 diffs look like they'd be perfect for 33's to keep the stock gear ratio

Will try to find a stretch of road on the way home tonight where I can sit on 100kph (legally) to test the 33" numbers.
I tend to watch the temp gauge more than the tacho :eek:
BTW: sincere apologies to Wanglemoose... this thread was supposed to be about the sound of his exhaust... which is very nice indeed.

something odd seems to have occurred... thought I responded to this earlier...
With my 33"s and 4.1 diff gears I observed the following speed/revs:
at 80kph, revs were approx 1850-1900rpm
at 100kph, revs were approx 2300rpm
Seems pretty much right according to Junosi's calculations... and the dual exhaust sounds lovely at these speeds/revs.
Cheers, Paul.
