View Full Version : Patrol vs Isuzu County with a twist

I was just looking through some video from some trips we've done and I thought the Isuzu owner's might find this amusing.
It's not obvious form the different camera angles, but it's exactly the same bit of track the two vehicles are on.

YouTube- Patrol vs Isuzu County

Cheers, Murray

ps. It's on the Border Track (SA, Vic) It was a great trip.

Great vid,
Was that running at idle in 2nd low? Isn't that something that destroys gearboxes with these engines?
(Not knocking you, just curious)

The 'torque impulse' at idle is more of a long term problem. There's been plenty of discussion about that on the forum. I wouldn't worry about it in this sort of situation.

only if you do it for prolonged periods.

Landrover doing with simplicity what ford had to develop "electronic Stall control" to do in a vehicle that could already do what was required.

doing it to show up nissan/toyota/ford/jeep owners is perfectly acceptable and something I actively encourage.

Thanks Murray, Dave,
I've cringed every time I've accidently laboured mine to sub-idle speeds, would have been stuck accelerator-deep in a puddle yesterday if it wasn't for the engine's determination

Ha ha, you just can't stop a good Isuzu Landy, even with no-one behind the wheel:D.

I've often seen Isuzu Landys 'chugging' over a crest of a sand dune or similar situation where many other engines would have just stalled. The driver of the blue County in the clip is well known for his policy of "Never take your foot off the accelerator unless you have actually ceased forward motion" :D:p

Awesome, Thanks.
Highlights what we all know deep down.
The Driver/ LR relationship is a collaborative effort!
Give and take on both sides. Just like a good working dog, just let em do the job.

come on in all fairness there is nothing wrong with a td42, and would do the same thing. the diff-erance (excuse the pun) is the diff pumkin possition in the patrol as to the rover, the rover as them more off-set and the patol rear is more centered.

Agree that the Td42 is as about as legendary as the Nissan gets, BUT it is attached to a soulless and boring vehicle.:D

Can't believe you said that Lamb - boy:p:p

Many, many times I have purposely idled along at 3 or 4 rpm(:p) when there are people watching, just to showcase the ultimate torque and beauty of such an engine.
I also do it when I AM on my own, just to feeeellll good:angel:

On a trip I did up the Cape some years ago I had the misfortune to have the vacuum actuator stuff up on my LT95 when I was up there. Of course it was in the unlocked position and I really needed 4WD to get out of there. Steep rutted pebbly ironestone ridges to cross and then about 16K of beach driving alone with no other vehicles to assist. I was towing my No 5 trailer and had a fair load on - as I expected the ridges pulled me up with no front wheel drive. Rather than pull the actuator off and manually lock it I decided to use the winch to get me over the ridge as there were a few small trees within range. With the gearbox in low 1st, engine idling and the PTO winch engaged I was able to get out and stand in front helping the winch rope feed properly onto the spool. It was so easy and the motor didnt even seem like it had any load at all and was going that slow that you could walk back, adjust the steering wheel and then go back to the winch. Pulled itself out effortlessly. The beach work was no problem even with the cd unlocked.:D:D:D

A friend of mine has recently purchased a 3.0 Pootrol :D We went out a couple of weeks ago for a play in the forest, all was going well for him until we came to a rather steep step about 4' high.

Yes, I challenged him to get up this bank on tickover only ;) He watched in amazement as the county crawled up and over and then it was his turn. On his first attempt the vehicle stalled, and the second :D and third, he then gave it a bit of welly and got nothing but wheelspin. Eventually he did get up the bank, but it seemed to have no low down grunt.

Love the video Murrary, I'll have to send my friend the link;)

Similar situation on the CREB Track recently, but it was so slippery, I had problems getting round to adjust the steering wheel, then back to the spool. You had to climb around the vehicle, using it for support, while it was moving up a reasonably steep incline, otherwise you'd slip over and get left behind. I was scrambling, but the Isuzu made it to the top without a second glance. I'm gonna bring chains next time.:D

Shame they didn't make the TD42 direct injection.

:D Its all good mate!

In fact the 'Cruiser 12HT, the Nissan Td42, and the 'good old' 4BD1 are my favourite legendary tough diesel engines. There can't be too many who would dispute that.

That's probably the holy trinity of Jap diesels.

For me its the 12H-T. I hate the sound of 4 pots. Direct injection, turbo, [straight] six config and a decent displacement ticks my boxes.

I have a customer with a HJ61 Sahara, apart from the fact that it is a little dated in the dash department I like driving it. 740,000km and still going strong. Engine overhauled at 500K, ( I suspect because 'it could be', it was owned by a trucking company boss apparently) should see a million easily.
Even with leaf springs the ride is pretty good:eek: Nippondenso A/C is icy, power steering is a little approximate but really, I'd rely on it to go for ages yet. IMHO the last decent Toyota was the 80 series, but the bestest engine was still the 12HT.

That's an impressive mileage:eek:. I've seen a few very tidy late 61 Sahara autos lately but a few are up around 12k, most around 8/10k. I just couldn't bring myself to part with potentially D2 money for a 1989 LC. I'd have to sell my D1 to get me halfway there, and it is an incredibly well set up vehicle with about as much spent on mods than market value.

THAT MUCH??? A fellow in WA I used to work for has an auto sahara with 650K, everything works, 240litre longrange tank:eek:, dual a/c, etc etc etc in good running order for about$6500. I was impressed as to its condition etc and even thought about buying it and bringing it over here, as there are precious few good examples here.

Sad thing is, if its genuine it's probably a decent buy in many ways.

Although, if its never been on road, why bother having it registered? :p Kinda like 7-Eleven stores, open 24/7/365 and still have locks on the doors!!

Funnily enough the registration is cancelled according to Vic Roads:eek:. Although its not financed or written off, so I doubt it's a rebirth.

The best diesel toyota ever made.
Their 14BT and 15BT are good engines too, but I'd still rather have my 4BD1T than either of those.
