It looks as though the event might be canceled this year unless the Planning Minister, Mr Justin Madden gives it the nod.
The Baw Baw Shire Council have changed either the planning Regulations, or their Interpretation of the Planning Regulations is faulty.
This would be a huge loss to local businesses because, as you know, the event draws thousands of spectators (growing each year), competitors and crews from all over Australia (it's part of a national series, and is televised).
It also means that Local Businesses will miss out on income at a time of year when it is welcome, Late Winter/Early Spring not being a really busy time.

Hymie,
Thanks for altering us to this.
This is certainly not good for local businesses - not sure what we can do though? I know that it is a huge local attraction (amongst the old and the young).
It would be scandalous to see it end over local government red tape.
Cheers,
Michael

When I was responsible for organising the event up to 2007, our sell to the local council was the economic benefits for the local community and we always tried our hardest to push people back into local accomodation, tourist shops, petrol stations and eateries to support that push.
It is unfortunate that council has now changed it's view of the bylaw which has always existed which prohibits motorsport on private property. It doesn't only affect 4x4 but bikes, quadbikes and anything with an engine. I guess they must of had a change of staff in planning. They are not however the only council that interprets the law in this way.

What gets me is that the Local Councilor for that Ward owns the property next door and has no problems with the event.

Been discussing this with some competitors and I understand the property is in an area under a farming zone overlay and under the current planning provisions, this zoning prohibits land use for motor racing tracks. It appears Baw Baw Shire are implementing this now......although I believe this has been in place for up to 4 years.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong!
