I've got one, a bit slow but never left me stranded and very economical.

stay on top of the cooling system and the timing belt, keep it properly and regularly serviced, dont tweak it up too hard and it will probabley outlast you.

I am hoping also to get around 400k km's out of mine.

Good job there, when I went looking for my 300tdi, I found more on that motor than almost anything else. Search is your friend mate.;)

Yep, servicing, timing belt and cooling system. Once you're on top of that the 300tdi is a poem.

From what I can make out, change the timing belt every 80,000km or so. Its expensive (just did mine, $400 for a genuine LR belt plus labour, if you are clutz like me, another $500 at LR specialists Coopers). If you ignore the change interval you risk the belt snapping and doing a lot of damage to the head.

Not fast, but will pull like a steam train from idle.

Just did 'The Cape' trip. Fully loaded with camping gear, got 9.5l/100kms on bitumen and 10.5l/100kms (with lowered tyre pressures) on the dirt. Over the 10000km trip with outback and cape fuel prices, thats a lot of money left in your pocket over cruisers and patrols.

Very good engine. I have a 530K example that until the vehicle met with a sticky end:(, is still going strong with only a head gasket change and an injector pump overhaul at 400K.

Next best engine to a 4BD1 in a Landy.

JC,It's common knowledge that Tdi's wear out big ends at 250K,you should talk to the experts. Pat

The advice is usually check @ 300,000km. :p

Plenty of them do Pat, there's been more than enough evidence on here.

:confused::confused:

I have checked quite a few over my time, and most problematic for some reason seem to be 1998 WA vin range vehicles. Possibly a manufacture issue? In fact the last 2 crank failures I have seen were in this VIN range. These were both broken through a journal. Got to be something in that.

I have had very little drama with earlier Tdi's, at least that has been my experience, draw from that what you will. I'm more worried about head gasket failures at 250K personally.

Hmmm, couldn't work out with mine if it was bearing overload or just overlay failure from crap bearings.

I'd plumped for overload failure, now you've given me reason to reconsider JC as mine fits that VIN range.
