Hello fellow P38'ers,
My Rangie is due to be a wedding car tomorrow, and out of necessity I had to remove the water pump and replace it today. Sounds easy, huh? Well it is once you've got your head around the Viscous fan removal.
I searched everywhere to see if anyone had some advice on EXACTLY how to remove the unit without breaking the nut or any other bits in the engine bay, with no luck! So here i'm starting a thread for other poor buggers like me. This is how I removed the Viscous fan/coupling.
Tools:
36mm spanner
Breaker bar big enough to fit over the end of the 36mm spanner
Pry bar and a rag
Note - to save damaging the radiator and other bits, remove it! You'll find that the extra room aids in changing the water pump anyway!
1. Crack a beer.
2. 36mm spanner (its best to use a 36mm and not a shifter, but whatever floats your boat!) onto the nut in front of the pulley.
3. Place your pry bar with the sharp bit on the end softened by a rag, into position to prevent the water pump pulley from spinning anti-clockwise. Its your choice to leave the fan belt on or not - I left mine on for the added tension it gave. No damage was sustained during this exercise.
4. In one sharp movement, give your 36mm spanner some curry towards the drivers side of the engine bay (looking at the front of the car this is anti-clockwise).
5. Remove pry bar and spanner.
6. Spin the fan anti-clockwise and eventually it'll fall off.
If this hasnt worked, make sure your spanner was located properly in the first place - its a tight spot and if it's a bit overcast or night time (like in my case) it's hard to guess.
According to RAVE you need two special Land Rover tools, they don't let out any hints as to what these tools look like, nor what you do with them, so don't call your dealer unless you know someone in the workshop! Very un-helpful b@stards.
Hope this helps someone else one day - I'd been working on getting the damn thing off for a few hours before I got it.
