it eventually wears out anyway - higher current seems to accelerate this
the switch (or a non-genuine copy) is readily available from LR parts suppliers, relatively cheap and easily replaced
it is a problem and an inconvenience though when they fail without warning (always at night - because that's when they're used)
..... a useful spare part to carry I think :)

am i right that its the headlight bulbs if they been upgraded that cause,s the switch to fail ????

Not so, mine are original bulbs, it's just taken a little longer, than with uprated bulbs to melt down the white plastic board that holds the contacts in place.:o

hey hans
the long term fix is a new switch and some relay so that all the current by-pass's the switch......switch should last 10 times longer

X2 Kelvin is right I have a relay for each headlight and the previous owner installed those back in 1997 when he replaced the headlight switch.
Still going strong and have higher wattage headlight bulbs but cannot remember what wattage :(

One reason why I installed one of those Traxide headlight upgrade kits to my Defender.
Brighter lights for a start and hopefully less chance the headlight switch will fail.
Well worth the effort.

the Puma has a headlight relay to protect the switch, I don't know if you can copy the wiring to improve previous models

Hi,
My lights on my 97 Defender went out this morning (brief flicker on parkers, then nothing) so I'm assuming its the switch. Where's the best spares place in Adelaide to pick up one quickly?
(oh and anyone know what the part number is?)
Cheers

All sorted, TRS has one in stock, pulled mine apart and had the new on in in about 20 minutes. The old one hadn't melted like other people describe, there just simply wasn't a contact plate anymore - flimsiest little plastic switch I have ever seen as well.
I'll upgrade my wiring soon as i want to put some brighter lights in the beast anyway.
