A Canadian fighter pilot has ejected himself out of a fighter jet just seconds before it smashed into the ground and exploded into a spectacular fireball.

Captain Brian Bews was practising for an airshow near Alberta in the country's midwest when the jet stalled, banked to the left and hurtled into the ground.

Captain Bews escaped with just minor injuries after he parachuted to the ground and landed hard. His family said his ego was "hurting pretty bad

Theoretically - ground level - yes.

Years ago the chief "tester" at Martin Baker used to sit in an ejection seat on what was essentially a Wile.E.Coyote rocket sled contraption. At a certain speed he'd eject !
