After 50,000kms its time for new brake pads all around for my 2008 Defender. Land Rover want well over $500 for that job and I'm sure that it can be done for lot less.

What are the best brake pads to get and where? I'm in Melbourne so a local supplier would be great. I would like pads that are robust, quiet and dependable of course. What would you recommend and why?

Is 50,000km a reasonable amount of travel for a set of brake-pads? Good? Bad?

Thank you for your advice.

Why don't you check out your local Brake and Clutch workshop, or go to SuperCheap and browse their Girling brake pad catalogue, Regards Frank.

Hi Marek,

Some good opinions here: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-2/108195-new-brake-pads.html

I like Bendix.

46,000km and definitely don't read replacing on my 08MY Defender and over 30,000km of that was towing the Kamper.

I guess it also hasn't driven a lot in stop start traffic either but I'd expect more out of the pad's. They're easy enough to replace if you're at all handy.

In 80,000kms I replaced my rear pads twice, not because they were worn (they were down to about 50% thickness), but because I couldn't stop them squeeling. I replaced the front pads only once, due to wear.

I used genuine pads each time, I can't remember exactly how much they were, but they wern't cheap :(

I was advised that on the puma the genuine was really the only way.. This advice didn't come from a dealer..

However I'm not sure why..

I paid less for my puma pads (full set) then I paid for a full set of bendix on my disco. Not sure whether I was being looked after there though:)

I've done 57,000 km and my pads have a heap left. The type of driving you do will dictate the degree of wear/km.
