View Full Version : Dust in D4 cabin?

Has anyone had any problems with dust getting into the cabin of the D4 on long stretches of fast dirt road?
My series 2 was bad for it and I have spoken recently with some LC200 owners who have said the LC200 are terrible for dust getting in.

Most cars if not all will some dust in, trick is to have positive pressure in the cabin to keep dust out.

In other words, keep windows up and put aircon on to keep a higher air-pressure on inside.
Works a treat, even on my old RRC 85 I had.;)

My D3 and four others in our club have never had dust ingress problems. It was really noticable on a recent Lake Eyre trip that they are really well sealed so I assume it would be the same with the D4. :)
D1 and D2's have had issues around the rear door seals and LR came out with an extra upper seal for the D1.
Dust issues with the LC200 have been reported right from their release.

Dust in the LC is very common.

I have just finished a trip over lots of dirt and I had no problems with dust getting in the D4.

Must have different dust on the other side of the rabbit proof fence.

Even on Recirc, I have a fine coating of red dust inside already. My thought is that if you can smell it, it is getting in. I can smell it.

Ahh, my post was obviously was not clear enough.
I am thinking of upgrading the D2a and wanted to know if there is any dust problems with the D4.:)
The only issue I have with Land Rover is the lack of dealers and service centres on the west coast of Oz.

Simple answer for me. No dust problems with my D4.

Never had any dust in my D3 normal or re-circ. :D
LC200 has a reputation for letting dust in. Top Gear Aus found out in the even more expensive Lexus version.

Somewhere a while back, I recall it being mentioned - that LR changed the recirculate function on D4s. It now opens every X minutes (let X=10 to 30):D

Something to do with allowing more oxygen into the cabin.

Or maybe I was dreaming...

You can override this behaviour by holding the recirc button in for a few secs.

and this includes not using recirc unless eating the dust of other vehicles.

I don't even turn-up the fan in my D4 though as the external shape of the rear pillars and roof of the vehicle doesn't create much of a low-pressure area behind the rear, unlike the D2 that loves to suck dust up particularly if not fitted with a dust deflector.

Correct, do not use recirc, unless in following dust (for as short a period as possible) it will try to suck unfiltered air in which is not what you want. The other trick is to partially block the air exit vents located at the rear of the vehicle to create more pressure. Perhaps someone has found where they are on the D3/4 I have not gone looking yet. A bit of duct tape over before a trip does the trick.

Behind the rear lights. The have rubber one way flaps over them so if working correctly theu would explain why the D3/4 is so good at keeping dust out.

just finished the Gibb in a D3... that's a very fast dirt track these days. Dust was shooting out the holes in the rear seals and i could smell bull dust in the D3. couldn't see dust particles in the car though (you know when there is sunlight and you can see bits floating around in the sunlight)

switched to outside air when clear in front and then re-circ when on-comoing cars or following someone else. This might have limited the dust to the back but i didn't smell dust up the front using this method, so partially worked i suppose.

photo is of bottom seals of the upper tailgate.

Looks like you could do with the tailgate adjusting.
Dust is getting inside the tube of the seal and getting in through the breather holes.

When closed you shouldn't be anle to see the holes.
