Hi Everyone,
Currently own a P38 1995 HSE and happened to come across a 1998 Range Rover P38 HSE 4.6L at Manheim-Fowles "Salvage" Auction on Wednesday. Vehicle was there for Minor Hail Damage (some minor dings on bonnet... nothing major).

Vehicle had traveled 95,000km and was for sale by previous owner in April/May for $20,000 on CarSales.com.au.

I went down to the auction not having any idea what the Vehicle would sell for. Things were looking pretty grim when the item before the Range Rover (1999 Toyota Land Cruiser Grande with Smashed Up Front End) went for $11,000...

Anyhow, get to the Item and Auctioneer asks do we have $6000, No Takers... $5000, Still no Takers, $4000, No Takers... Vendor Reserve of $3000 and the auction starts.

I'm first in at $3000, auctineer almost whacks the hammer down before another decides to come in at $3100, I come back at $3200 and everythings finished, done and dusted at $3200...

So... I was pretty stoked, Vehicle has arrived this afternoon and all I can say is wow... The Engine seems so "Tight" compared to my 212,000km 95 HSE... no rattles or anything... Only Dramas are

1) Sagging Roof Lining (Easy Fix)
2) Noisy Air Compressor for EAS, Lots of Vibrations ete (Any Ideas on alternative or cheap rebuilt/decent compressor)
3) Drivers Side Door Handle Broken (Any Sources for Spares?... Is it a Hard Job?
4) Sort of Metallic Vibration at Idle in Drive... Think it might be the exhaust/Catalytic Convertor ete (they move the cars with Forklifts around the Salvage Yard..)

Other than that she's a beauty, Interior is in fanastic condition, no missing plastic bits or anything, Leather is beautiful...

So hopefully all goes well when I take her to my mechanic tomorrow :)

Even if its a writeoff, you would make money parting it out.

It's listed on the Repairable Write-off List in Victoria, so will require a VIV Inspection but can't see that being a massive issue...

Sounds like you got yourself a great buy there, well done.

For 2) it might just be that the vibration mounts on the compressor need tightening or the bottom of the EAS box is rubbing on the wheel arch. See the "Rubbing and Vibration" :o section of my EAS Valve Block Renew PaulP38A.com (http://paulp38a.com/99p38a/eas-valve-block-renew/) page for some suggestions. If it is the compressor itself, maybe the piston seal is going/gone? I know a guy who can help you there too ;) (see my sig)

For 3) "Andrew e" on this forum might have one off one of his wrecks. Drop him a PM.

For 4) check the heat shields on the exhaust manifold (when cold) and the rubber hangers along the exhaust.

Cheers, Paul.

I like a story of a good bargain! (Must be the Dutch heritage!) :D

Well done! Keep us informed of how it goes.
