View Full Version : What products do you use to clean your D3

Hi folks, it's been a while since I've posted in here, though I've been in and out lurking. But I'm hoping you might be able to assist with guidance on products and materials that you use to clean your D3 inside and out.

So, questions that come to mind include:

1. So far, I have just used dampened towels to wipe away dust inside as I've been worried about damaging the fittings with chemicals. But I'm wondering if there's anything else more effective that will freshen it up a bit.

2. On the black trims - is one of the amorall tyre cleaners/shiners the most appropriate? If so, which one?

3. What about wax on the body of the car? Is there a particular brand you would recommend?

4. And the rims where the brake pad dust collects. Is there anything you would suggest for that?

Is there anything else I have forgotten?

As always thank you in advance for your assistance.

Sorry, haven't got a D3 but wrt to products, it has to be Auto-Glym. I have just about their entire range, it a bit more expensive but once you build up the full compliment the products last for quite a while.

I have a D4. :) Through all my cars I have used Meguiars products and find them a lot better than the Kitten / Selleys / Turtle products. The price is a bit more, but only a bit. Meguiars Gold Class wash in a large handled bottle is quite affordable from SuperCheap Auto, and gives a lot richer lather.

Interior I use microfibre cloths (Sabco has some good ones) with water.

I haven't tried this myself, but the D3.co.uk site recommends peanut butter for the black exterior trim. They go so far as to recommend smooth peanut butter!

I too am a Meguiars fan for the exterior, especially the black plastic trim. They make am exterior detailer that you rub in with a cloth and wipe of excess.
I use am anti static cloth to wipe up dust on the interior and every now and then use a spray similar to armourall called Aerospace to treat the surfaces. I was told not to use armourall because of the silicone in it.
The best leather treatment that I have ever used to do the seats is a Jaguar product that I purchased from ULR Landrover Melbourne. Awesome product. Hope this helps.
BTW: My wife nicknamed me Mr Meguiar because I am such a fan of their products.
Cheers, Craig

I have been using Bowdens Own after using Mcguires for many years. Very happy with the results. Have also tried their leather love product on the seats. Seems to do a better job than the stuff I was getting from woolies from the furniture manufacturers.
Australian export window cleaner on the glass($2.00 a can from supercheap), dash and console. Spray and wipe on the kick panels etc.

If you want to use good gear then use Meguairs.

Last Touch or Final Detail with a microfibre cloth will clean surfaces like door surrounds.

Soft Wash Gel is what I would recommend to wash with.

Wonder Wheels is very good for the rims.

For wax - if you are happy to pay the money then use P21s Concourse Carnuaba Wax.

yep that's an incentive to calm down.

Seriously though any normal car-cleaning product works on a D3. Just one tip, when you're hosing the underneath after a mud run use offroad height+, it's easier, and the front grill detaches very easily.

Should clarify that I mean the metal of the doors - not the trim.

My first thought was to ask for a picture.

But I'm not so sure I want an image of a D3 with frangipanis seared into my memory.

LOL RMP, I won't do that to you. Images of Alex being conditioned (A Clockwork Orange) are coming to mind:

Well boys, as of Sunday, I have a new favourite shop! Goodbye Mecca Cosmetica. Goodbye to the cosmetics counters of David Jones. On Sunday, I discovered...Super Cheap Auto! Yes, my friends, and Dave the sales assistant is my new friend.

There were shelves and shelves of cleaning equipment (not to mention everything else)! I went in, I shopped and I conquered. Spent almost $100 and walked out with kit to be proud of.

Then I gave my girl a makeover.

She got vacuumed in every nook and cranny and might I say I "lingered"? Would that be rude? We do have the 7 seats up occasionally, but when we do it, we are generally in a rush - boys to soccer, grandparents on an outing, you know the drill. This time I put up every seat and I, well, "lingered". What a marvel of engineering the D3 is!

Seriously, when I think of England, I usually think of the Royals and I cringe. (I can say that, I'm born there ;).) But now, I think of Land Rover. And I don't care that they didn't do well in the JD Power reliability tests. I just LOVE the way those seats fold into each other so seamlessly and easily. It defies the fact that the car is so heavy and strong. All seem right with the world when everything is so...neat!

Anyway, I digress. I vacuumed, had her washed, then brought her home and polished, blackened, cleaned the rims, shined the tyres. It took virtually the whole day and my arm was so tired last night I couldn't sleep. And the tips of my fingers so sore and waxy I couldn't even type (well, I waxed our other car too, not wanting her to feel left out).

But...what a difference! I used Meguiar's Deep Crystal Wet Look Cleaner Wax on her body and Mothers Naturally Black on the trims. Oh. My. God. Mother's Milk, more like it! Her black plastic trims were fading - particularly around the wheels, under the doors and on top of the mirrors. Massaging in some of this stuff has brought them back to a nice, strong black. I thought it might have faded overnight, but no, still there this morning!

Sorry, I know I'm raving, but she is just so GLORIOUS! I keep walking out into the garage and stroking her. Is this car porn? What has gotten into me?? Maybe I need a dose of what Alex had, LOL.

Anyway, thank you for all your helpful suggestions. I would have been completely overwhelmed in that shop had I not gone in with them. And on a final note, I think Freddie said it better than I can:

rmp, this has gotta go into the stories thread..... just the kinda thing I had in mind when I started the whole why I love my D3 thing!

A question, I am one of those that likes to leave my D3 dirty, spends most of it's life on a construction site, so cleaning is a bit pointless anyway, and it adds a bit of street cred……

Anyway, due to time pressures recently I made a huge mistake, and on a recent trip to Sydney I got the car storage place, where I park the car for such trips, to wash Audrey for me. Now the thoughts of someone else’s hands all over my girl are the subject of another thread, but they well and truly messed up her paint work. There were 3 or 4 tar spots that they took it upon themselves to rub out and scratched the paintwork something terrible. So, what products are there out there that I can use to restore Audrey’s show room shine, for the times that she is actually clean?

OMG! I can't believe they would keep scrubbing when they saw what damage they were doing. Let alone doing 3 more!!! That is disgusting! Poor Audrey, and I bet you didn't notice until you got home and had a good look by which time it was too late to say anything.

By the way, how did she come to have the name Audrey?

If it is 'scratched' eg you run the back of a fingernail over it and you can feel a cut in the paint then it will need a repaint :bat:

If your fingernail does not 'drop' into a cut and the 'scratches' are like 'bush rash' then they are in the upper surface of the paint and they should come out.

If the second is the case then send me a PM.

Pictures? Damn! I should have done befores and afters. I was so hyped, it didn't even occur to me. I tell you, that Mothers Naturally Black is incredible. And it's not even greasy!

I also used "Mother's" products before and can recommend them. 20% off at SuperCheap Auto in the latest catalogue. Also, if you join up on their website you get some type of voucher for a discount in the first month.

My thoughts exactly! and that is exactly was happened, picked up the car late at night and only noticed the following day when I woke Audrey up and took her out into the sunlight…… was sooooooo peeved!

By the way, how did she come to have the name Audrey?

All my cars have had names, something I take a lot of flak for….. I thought everybody did it…… :( but anyway, my first Land Rover was a ’73 RRC, it was definatley a he, and he ended up as Humphry, just seemed to fit, what with him being an old English Gentleman and all. My second Land Rover was a little Freelander and she was Lucille the Land Rover, or Lucy for short. My D2 was Lucy 2 or Too as the case may be…… I must have been uninspired on the day she was named. As for Audrey, Safari Barbie named her. We struggled with a name for her, and one day Audrey just popped out, I figured she is big, she is English (the car, not Barbie) and Audrey fits……. So it has stuck. My toddler calls both our cars by their names, and half way across a parking lot she will yell “there’s Audrey!” and then in a very knowledgeable tone she will explain to us uneducated adults, “Audrey is a Land Rover” makes me proud that little girl…… anyway that was a very long answer to a short question……

As Chief Storyteller your wish is my command...'tis done.

Thanks rmp!

Cute story about Audrey. Though I don't get the "big" connection. Audrey's should be small like Audrey Hepburn, LOL. Your little girl sounds gorgeous.

I read the Stories thread last night. It was great, I loved it.

You know, our other now car is a BMW and it is a lovely car. I love driving it, it is elegant, fast and has a great user interface (if that's what you can call it). But it is the Disco that gets me really excited. Because it is the Disco that is full of possibilities. It will be the Disco that opens up new worlds for my boys. Ways to enable them to appreciate the beautiful country we live in and learn about the environment first hand. Those stories brought that home. Thank you.

(Although Celtoid's one made my hair stand on end!)

In my defense, I was thinking of a distant, and large grey haired english Aunt named Audrey when we named Audrey, rather than Audrey Hepburn...... Although, Audrey has the same amount of class! :)

Isn't that why we all drive Discos? they get us to and from work, the kids to and from school..... but sitting behind the wheel, you can just feel the potential, the car is almost longing to get off the black top..... there is a whole world out there that is just waiting for us and our Discos......

Yep, there is a big, BIG difference between a "boy clean" and a "girl clean". Spoken as a girl who once shared a house with 4 other males.
