View Full Version : Beach Driving and Air Filters

Just a quick one (making up for 6 months of no posts ;)):
We had our D3 serviced earlier this week and they identified that the air filter was somewhat clogged with sand.
I questioned the technician and he said there were no loose grommets or anything, so my guess is that some sand in the filter is considered "normal".
To those of you who beach drive, do you get a lot of sand in your air filter? And do you make a point of cleaning out your air filters when you return? If so, is this an onerous task?
I'm assuming the only way around it is to get a snorkel, but that seems a bit over the top when it's our intention to maybe drive on the beach say, once a month at most?
As always, thanks in advance for the advice.

Once a month is quite regular and worth the snorkel.

LOL, you guys.
Nah, I never went but life took over for a while and things were quiet on the Disco front. I didn't have any quesitons and I find I can't contribute technical answers like you guys can *mwah*.
Interesting Tombie, thank you. Any idea what a snorkel is worth?

Safari snorkel for a D3 is about $550 supply only.
Then bank on about $170 to fit.

Hi Fifi,
There are a few more added advantages to having a snorkel, gravel road driving bit higher out of the dust cloud, water crossings (nuff said) and that added bit of "turbo" air with the snorkel facing into the wind, just to mention a few. Prices are about right as mentioned I fitted an ARB snorkel, there is some fiddly metal removal inside the wheel arch if you decide to tackle this one yourself. The finished article as you say looks pretty "cool". Functional and well worth the cash

fwiw ... it's only a D2a, and we live at stockton beach, but I clean out my a/f and air box every 2500km or so, and normally pull about 2-3 tablespoon of sand out of the bottom of the airbox with the dustbuster .... no snorkel ... a/f element doesn't hold sand as airflow is up, sand falls into bottom of airbox ... still have plastic inner guards so intake is sheilded ... but it still gets some sand!
Get a snorkel !

Thanks Fluid. I was wondering how difficult it actually was to clean it on a regular basis.

Not difficult at all.
It probably takes me all of 10min. Disconnect a couple of leads from MAF & a vacum line from the airbox, undo a s/s hose clamp to release the airbox hose that goes to the turbo, unclip the MAF, unclip the airbox lid, remove a/f and tap out, vacum out the sand, wipe down all the dust on the inner surfaces of both sides of the airbox, clean the MAF with some CO Contact Cleaner, and re-assemble.
I can't imagine that the D3 would be much more, if any.
Cheers

That's why we missed you.... :) all the technical guff here gets a bit tedious, albeit neccessary, and is nice to liven it up a bit and keep things light...... we all know all too well how life gets in the way of important stuff (LRs that is) either way, good to have you back! :)

Without knowing the source of the snorkels, I can't be sure it is relevant, but it might be.

vnx205 I will go right now and find a new avatar just for you ;), LOL. By the way, that's a very interesting site you've linked us through to. Who would have thought snorkels could be so different in quality?

Awww, come on, surely you're all not brissly bearded alpha males? There has to be some SNAGs in there amongst you? But I guess they might not admit it, right?
Come on boys, find your inner SNAG and hug each other!
And the first one to come back in here and say "the only snag they know of is the one that's cooked on the barbie" will get Bill the Tooth Fairy thrown at them! ;):p
Oh, vnx (can I call you that now I know you better? :p), that avatar reads "not just your average desperate housewife" in case you were wondering. It's hard to see on here, isn't it. Maybe I need to do a signature, but I can't work out how.

You have Johnny Foreigner on this one...... took me 8 weeks just to figure out what the bbq kinda snag was...... Fifi, would be very useful to know what the other kind is..... just to save this visitor to your shores a potentially very embarrassing situation! :(
As a parting shot, this thread seems to have been hi-jacked….. who’s fault that is, is up for debate…. So apologies for my part, got excited at Fifi’s return, but seeing as it was your thread in the first place Fifi, please don’t send out Bill! Saaaaayyyyy that reminds me, what do we have to do to get Police Girl thrown at us?

Fifi,
I watched Broke Back Mountain but have never thought of hugging my mates (off the sporting field) or having special cuddles in the tent, and all my fishing gear is used !!.
Does that make me a SNAG or a Alpha Male ??
Regardless I would still have no use for a Huggy emoticon !!

George

Bah, no matter, you're all a whole lot more refreshing than the mothers' mafia in the school carpark :D.
Oh, DiscoSaffa - SNAG: Sensitive New Age Guy! Hmmm, Police Girl...will have to give that some thought. You're not supposed to see her as a reward, you know!
Vxn - thanks for that. Might play around with my signature once the tribe is fed, bathed and bedded.
DiscoWeb - watching Brokeback Mountain is a big step. Were you trying to impress your girl? I think that alone makes you a SNAG *snicker* :p. (only joking, really)

Strange... OK, just been in to my control panel to find that I don't have that signature option you've circled, vxn. Perhaps you have to have more than a certain number of posts? Could that be the case?
I can't find any technical section on here to ask (that's about the forum and not about the cars, LOL).
Any suggestions anyone? http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-hug008.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)
Edited: Scrap the above. I found the FAQ section of the forum and the signatures link within that. It seems I am not allowed a signature, so you must have to have met some pre-ordained criteria to have one I guess. *slinks away with her tail between her legs*

The big question is, does the above snorkel fit into the category mentioned below...... because at $365 it is very appealing, but not if one has to replace it every 3 years......
