Hi all, today my exhaust started smelling like paint or paint thinners a bit. Have I got a dodgy batch of diesel. Only started doing it after fueling up at Caltex. Was only about 40 litres and is running ok. TD5 Defender.

Check your exhaust, have you run over anything like a plastic bag or something thats being burnt on the exhaust?

HI Craig, sent idea on your smell regarding bio -diesel and non-genuine filters butI'm useless on computers and probably sent it to russia!!!Als ,if your EGR valve is sticking it sends exhaust gas back to be burnt which can cause a pongy exhaust, best to remove egr as they all stick eventually. could just be dodgy fuel as well.https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/12/13.jpg

Well Craig, cant find first response, damn!!can't and hate typing, last reply took 2omin to typeS@#$T.Will try again,I've been making and using b100 biodiesel (made to standard) for 15 years ,did 130000 in tdi disco now 50000 so far in Td5 with no probs,BUT.....mymates Td5 has gon through 4,yes four fuel pumps in same time using mostly my fuel and small amounts of dino diesel. For a long time his fuel and tank smelt like oil(turps ) based paint with sticky red residue which stuck ceramic-discs together in low press side of of pump.We first blamed fuel companies but he switched brands and same result.TOcut long story short, only difference in vehicles washis using after market fuel filter and mine allways with genuine filter????Saved his last pump by fitting 15A fuse instead of factory 30A,blew fuse instead of burning out pump.Oxidation in biodiesel is a problem due to high oxygen levels (good for combustion though) so all my fuel gets anti-oxidation treatment. Not really helping you but thought it was rellavant to smell.Mate now using l'rover filter so tests ongoing, will keep forum posted, cheers for now,Gregghttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/12/13.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2012/07/1222.jpg

EGR removed and definately not supposed to be bio diesel, but who knows with some servos. No ill effects, have put through another 130 litres since Friday morning. If it was dodgy fuel I only got 40 litres and all seems good tonight in Cue.

LOL, definately not by the pump, but who knows with these servos.

Sounds like dodgy fuel Craig'e,good to see no harm done!We also treated mates disco with bio-cide for fuel bug but red stuff was not affected, forgot to mention that. Bad fuel (including biodiesel) can be found any where, including big flash servos!https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/12/13.jpg:angel:

When I was living an Alice driving tow trucks for a living I went to a diesel campervan that was running poorly. There was a very strange and strong smell to the exhaust.

I asked the bloke who owned it if he had refueled recently, the answer was yes. I then asked if he might have put ULP in by mistake. He was certain he hadn't, even to the point of walking to the service station and looking at the pump he had used.

It was at this point that I asked if he had a receipt for the fuel..... He was most embarrassed when he saw he had refueled with ULP, even though he swore he hadn't.

Hence my original question. :D

All good John, receipt says diesel and I had used this servo pump plenty of times when working up there for trucks and my own vehicle and the only diesel pump out front is at the end (and only diesel not multi purpose pump) apart from the high flow pumps out the side for trucks. Also the car in front of me was diesel and the one on the opposite side of the pump was diesel. Would be interesting to know if they had a similar experience. Car never ran rough at all, but today seems to be running a touch hotter than normal, possibly not related.
I remember when my brother put diesel into his Torana, was pretty embarrassed with all the white smoke.:D
