so shonky has come out from the dark side and joined the side of good and rightiousness and mud bashing and sand spraying and hill climbing and .........

yep....
one "Dave, can you have a look at a deefer" pm, a couple of phone calls some driving and probably all up less than 24 hours later shonky and shonkette are the proud owner of a fairly sound tdi300 deefer and back in sydney.
bit of spanner spinning to sort out the "I'm not letting you drive it that far in that condition and with that brake fluid" type issues on sunday morning and hes got about a grand to spend on it to make it a nice solid unit ready to tackle the world.
owned by them I'd say its got a long and well looked after life infront of it. At a guess it'll probably still be with them long enough to get baby seats put in it and then teach occupants of said seats to drive.
Just gotta teach shonkette to drive stick.

I am smug! :D
Yep - bought a 95 Deefer 110 Wagon. Dave gave it the whole nine yards for me and told me what was what - from which I negotiated a price. :)
Jumped on a plane, flew to Brisneyland and handed over some folding stuff!
Thanks a heap to Dave not only for the inspection, but thanks for putting us up for the eve and loaning your skills, tools, driveway, and Twitchy (:p) to get the brakes and bearings happy enough for the drive home. :D
After our morning spanner sesh, we left a bit after 12 midday and got home at about 11:30pm. It went like a dream all the way, and I was amazed at how much easier it is to drive a vehicle that doesn't gas you to death as you drive! No more double vision!
There are a few niggly things that need rectification to get it up to scratch, but nothing show-stopping. Things like buggered idler pulley bearings, a stuffed A frame ball joint, and wheel bearings that are on their way out. I had the local spanners do the idler pulley bearings for me today out of convenience, so thats another thing off the list. If I can find a suitable workspace for Sunday I'll attack the wheel bearings. :)
I'm happy. Mrs Shonky is happy. Everyone is happy! :D
It's got pretty much everything I want already on it and soon I will have it where I want it in terms of its up keep and then it is just a matter of staying ahead of the curve - which I intend to be neurotic about. ;)
Anyway - just so you all know it did happen:

Thanks also to:
Connie (Blk.Dame? :P) for her hospitality and for doing servo runs for brake fluid etc.
Twitchy, for pitching in on Sunday morning and for being a fellow 'Wang local. :D
Feenian-Eel, for offering to check the truck out for me during the week (which didn't eventuate due to time constraints on the part of the seller) :BigThumb:
and last but not least:
Adriana (Mrs Shonky) who not only was supportive of me buying yet another Land Rover, but actually was interested enough to buy herself a ticket too, and fly up to Qld with me to then spend 12 hours sitting in the co-pilots chair and make sure I didn't "test it out" tooooo much or fall asleep. :p They say good things come in small parcels... well she is 10 foot of incredible stuffed into a convenient 5 foot sack. :D

Back seat is not for baby seats yet - we aren't trying to have kids... just practicing... which incidentally is also what the back seat is for!
And yes - will have to continue madame's education, although I can see that over-centre clutch making life difficult for her. :(

Before we got married, my wife only drove autos. Since then we have had a Range Rover, a Land Cruiser, a Patrol, a Discovery & the Defender (& her Astra). All of them manuals.;)
Once she gets used to it she will be fine. Mrs Larry isn't that much taller than Mrs Shonky so height is no excuse.:p
Nice looking Defender BTW. When is the For Sale sign going on Thommo's windscreen???

I see you are still new in the way of the defender...
fold the back seat down and you can get a queen sized mattress in there.
just one more reason to own a deefer.

Yeah, she drove the patrol and she pokes the manual Laser paddock basher around alright... The Deefer's clutch is VERY sensetive and has quite a forceful return on it so that will make it harder (but not impossible) for her to get used to.
The Rangie is NOT staying! :( Too many toys... My old man is thinking about buying it, but if not it will go on the market. ;)

I know... :( I would have really liked to stop in on quite a few people, but as I said to Treads (on FB ) "if I did that trip and stopped for tea at the house of everyone I wanted to visit, I would have needed a week!"
Mr OB has some bits for me too. :( Will have to get them next time.
Well done mate, bring it around some time:cool:

You've had it four days now after nearly twelve hours driving it home, the important question is - what are you going to call the big white box? Mahn has already coined the Kelvinator, so, the Shonkinator????:p:p:p

I'm going to wait 'till I put it on NSW rego and see if that turns up any inspiration. ;)
No point calling it "Ronaldo" and then getting number plates that say "BOB-113" (hypothetically)
