Has anybody actually bought and fitted a set of 17" wheels on a D4 2.7 yet?

I have started looking for a set. Initial thought was the GMax Bona Fides which I had on my D3, but as a comparison I was looking at the Speedy Cross-5. Speedy are giving me stress and reckon they won't fit on a D4 even when I said that I have the old brake package and not that on the 3.0. I am aware that the brake caliper has been changed on the D4. Anybody have any idea if it has increased the width of the disc and caliper arrangement such that a standard 17" won't fit?

Tyres are going to be Maxis Bighorns (quoted $289 + freight for 265/70/17). Has anybody tried the 255/65/17? These are an 8 ply instead of the 10 ply 265 but are within legal size limits unlike the 265.

Dynamic are still trying to say their wheels are legal with an increase of 20mm per side. As noted many times in the forum my understanding it was 25mm total increase, not per side.

Thanks
Steve

A number of people on this forum are running Performance Wheels BB6 alloy wheels on D4's. These have a 1400kg capacity, important if you are ever are offroad and end-up with the weight of the vehicle balanced on 3 or 2 wheels.
I myself are waiting for a set of 5 BB6's to be delivered in two weeks (hopefully).

Both the GMax Bona Fides and Speedy Cross-5 only have a 955kg capacity rating. Great for 4x2 utes, not so good for a 4x4 heading offroad.
If you really want the 17x8 Speedy Cross-5 they come with a et48 offset & can be machined & customed drilled to suit the D4's 5x120 PCD & centre spigot.

I am getting the Bighorn 255/65x17's with the BB6's. Hopefully it will be a good tyre choice. They were recommended by a mate who had the same & intends to buy again.

Hi Ducks Guts,

Can I ask what the BB6s set you back?

Cheers,

Do you know the load index of these, or where I can find out?
Thanks

255/65/17 are 114 Q 8 ply
265/70/17 are 121 Q 10 ply,
getting tyre dealer to confirm what the side wall ply rating is on each. Info to date suggests that the 255 is 2 ply and the 265 is 3 ply.

RickO,

Check out the most recent edition of "4X4 Australia" mag , there is an article in there about a D3 (I think rather than the 2.7 D4) with the BB6 performance wheels. I think he mentioned $240 per wheel.

Also noted with a bit of interest an article about the marketing manager of ARB who is a D3 owner, nice to know it is not all Toyota and Nissans.

Regards,

George

$240 I wish!!!

I read the same article only last night and scoffed at the indicated price, although I will be using the article to wave under the nose of my tyre/wheel dealer.

The absolute best price I could get in the Hunter Valley Newcastle area 3-4 weeks ago when asking for quotes was $330ea.

That included the requirement for Performance Wheels to custom machine the offset to suit L/R D4 & drill the 5x 120mm PCD & deliver to the Valley.

I don't know what $240 buys, but it wouldn't be the BB6 to suit a D3/4. Not here in the Valley anyways!

Love to hear what others have paid for their BB6's...

Thanks Trobbo.

I saw your post at 2pm Fri 6/8/10 & immediately rang Triumph Rover Spares in South Australia.
They do have Performance Wheels BB6's, to suit D3 & D4's for $245 each + freight, & in charcoal colour, & available off the shelf!:o

I then rang Performance Wheels HQ also in S.A., and they confirmed that the BB6's are available in the standard Platinum (silver) colour and in Gloss Black & Charcoal.:o But charcoal is being discontinued sometime this month and will not be available anywhere in Australia except for Triumph Rover Spares who they will continue to supply as they have a 'special' business relationship.;)

 Now I am cranky. When I ordered by BB6's I wanted a grey or black colour if it was available. I stood at the counter whilst by local wheel outlet asked the Performance Wheels NSW Distributer if this request was possible. We were told NO. So with that information I ordered silver BB6's as there are no other suitable rim choices, and was told it would be a 4 week wait. Now I find out BLACK or CHARCOAL is also available. Off the shelf!

I contact my local wheel outlet, & he can't believe that this is possible. So he does the same ringing around & calls me back.
The NSW Distributer denies that we asked about colour choice. And to really p!ss us off, the silver BB6's have just been delivered to my local wheel outlet. My local wheel outlet also asked why he could buy retail from S.A & have it delivered cheaper than when buying from the NSW Distributor? He didn't get a satisfactory explanation on that.

Anyways, my local wheel outlet advised me to buy direct from Triumph Rover Spares, and that he will send the silver rims back. But the poor bugger is out of pocket for freight...all the way from & back to Adelaide.

So, I have now purchased 5xBB6's in CHARCOAL from Triumph Rover Spares at $245 each + $120 freight delivered to my door. Total cost $1345. Compared to previous cost of $1650.

So, thank you Trobbo.
You saved me $305 AND I got the rims in the colour I always wanted. You champion!

I've attached a photo of the new rims :D
