View Full Version : Can't separate head from block on Tdi

I have loosened all the headbolts on my Tdi but it doesn't want to budge. Am I missing anything? I had one bolt of which the head was stripped so I had to cut it off with an angle grinder (very carefully) so the bolt itself is still turned into the block but it shouldn't hold the head back.
Any ideas welcome

Crikey.
I hope the stuck bolt is not near the rear as I seem to recall there being not much room between the rear of the head and the firewall when you lift the head off the block. But I would have thought that a swift blow from a rubber mallet should get the head off the dowels. You may find that you need to patially raise the head so you can get some stellsons onto the bolt and try to remove it.

Im sure there are many techniques, but one that I have used is to attach hoist to the lifting lugs, preload the head with a bit of pull on the chain (not too much!)
Then rap-a-tap-tap about the edges of the head?
Those old worn out composite gaskets get sticky!

... in regards to clearing with the lift, on a disco it is tight but with the bonnet off on a fender you will be okay with a straight lift over your new "head stud"

Squirt a little diesel down the pots. Crank it over, blow it clean off the block:D.

The engine isn't in the vehicle anymore so it's literally just the head and block. Everything else has been removed.
I tried standing on the block and hoisting the head with an engine hoist but no luck.
Should one try and cut the gasket away with a blade?

remove one of the glow plugs make up an adaptor to fit a grease gun, turn the engine over till its valves are closed lock the crank and then fill the pot with grease. Dont pick the pot with the hole in it.

If it was still in situ, you could do what we used to do with aluminium head early Ford V8's. Slacken off the head nuts a couple of turns and start it.

A few cracks with a rubber mallett has always worked for me!, don't be shy
