I just bought a set of 6x9 kenwood speakers to replace the standed ones.

you will need 8 washes, 8 30mm bolts and nuts, 8 40mm screws, 8 speed nuts to fit the screws.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs133.ash2/39985_1496648930733_1069388587_31413713_8075190_n. jpg

Paint the spaces if need. (I painted them matt black)
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs305.snc4/40588_1496639530498_1069388587_31413668_127248_n.j pg

The first step was to take out the original speaker and pannel cover.
As you can see there is a bracket behind the cover that holds the speaker.

I used a drill to drill out the pop-rivits that hold the bracket in place.

Leaving the void empty.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs231.snc4/38901_1496652410820_1069388587_31413717_3015520_n. jpg

Next step is to mark out the shape of the new speakers.
I used the spaces which I used to space the speaker out to fit properly as there is no space behind the panel.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs285.snc4/40588_1496639690502_1069388587_31413672_7954052_n. jpg

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs273.snc4/39985_1496648770729_1069388587_31413709_7271590_n. jpg

Cut out the shape marked with a jigsaw. (be carful as it is a fiberus material that will make you itchy)
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs133.ash2/39985_1496648810730_1069388587_31413710_7699081_n. jpg

Know predrill 4 holes to screw the spacers to the front of the cover.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs133.ash2/39985_1496648850731_1069388587_31413711_3628532_n. jpg

Then screw 4 more holes for the speaker screws.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs133.ash2/39985_1496648890732_1069388587_31413712_1594619_n. jpg

slide the clips on in place and then screw the spacers onto the
pannel.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs231.snc4/38901_1496652370819_1069388587_31413716_4525996_n. jpg

Put the panel back into place and drill 4 holes to bolt it back onto the car.
(this will allow it to hold tight and not fall out)
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs211.snc4/38901_1496652530823_1069388587_31413719_3642098_n. jpg

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs111.ash2/38901_1496652490822_1069388587_31413718_8038887_n. jpg

screw the speakers into place and you know have 6x9's in the rear panels.

are the D1's pre-wired to the rear pillars? I would be interested in putting 6x9's into the rear pillars my D2 .....has anyone done it? the cover doesnt come off the pillar so simply so will be lot of work there.

The question I've got is why bother. Rear speakers are for rear fill and not meant for being a music source. Throwing rear speakers in does nothing but confuse the staging (unless you're running 5.1 processing which isn't normal).

A speaker is only going to be as good as its enclosure so just chucking some 6x9s willy-nilly into some panels without considering the enclosure they're going into is a waste of time.

95disco1 great to see people like you giving D1's a audio upgrade.....However rogan is on the money re 6X9's .....I have digital 5:1 in my D1 and it works a treat with just good quality/value 5" coax's (Polk) in the rear using OEM mounting and grill cover (cover essential when you load up) and some splashes of dynomat. Getting good front speakers on D1's to hum is the challenge, not the rears.

The 6X9's are prity much just for looks and also when I bought the car, it didn't have any speakers in the rear. They had been removed befor.
It sounds prity good just for standard wiring to the head deck but im also going to be putting them to an amp later.

First thing you want to do is cover those holes in the side of the panel - unless they're there for some good reason. Looks to me like there's a clear air path between the back and front of the speaker = very reduced bass response. Even something like closed cell foam wedged into the inside of the panel should help

There is foam on the inside of the panel that seals the gap.
I don't want bass from the 6X9's. I will be putting 2 10" slim line subs in the side pockets were the rear seats for the 7 seater usualy are

The D1's are pre-wired in the rear pillars.
If you would like to show me some pics of what you have to work with I could come up with a way to get them to fit.

“to hum” was in the context of wanting "to succeed…..to work out …..to come off ….to be successful blah blah".

funny language australian, I grew up to believe that if that something "hummed" it stank, or if something was "on the hum" it was either going rotten or was bodgie, or sometimes a bloke who was broke who was looking for quid was "on the hum".....funny language...hope we never lose it.....you young blokes ....look after it!
sorry for the thread hijack here.

My instalation might give you a few ideas.
10' Sub cabinet in mounted in rear side storage bin.
Decent speakers in front doors and rear pillars have been spaced out a little but it was worth the effort.
I transplanted decent tweeters into the front door pillar up-rights.
The 3 amps are mounted into a rack in the opposite side storage bin space.

Wiring is all custom laid for quality reasons. Head unit is Alpine dedicated i-Pod controller.

Sound is pretty darned sweet if I say so myself. and it doesn't really interfear with my rear cargo bay.

You're welcome.
Just to add to this.
Before I installed the Rockford Fosgate gear I used to run a 8" Bass Tube in the same space.
I fitted a small net above it to hold recovery straps in place.
We ony do sand and dirt recoveries here...so no wet mud to fall down into the woofer cone.
It might not match everyones needs but it's just another idea that people can use if space is an issue for a sub.
