I have the Deal Extreme 5" GPS (Ranga Special) and find it great. As the 101 is a bit hard to see behind I thought a reversing camera would be helpful so I bought one of these.

Deal Extreme also do a wireless camera that some people are using successfully DealExtreme: $45.82 Car 2.4GHz Wireless Rear View Parking NTSC Night Vision Camera and Receiver Set (DC 12V) (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.15747)

Best option is to wire it into your reverse signal, as the moment it powers on it overrides the GPS.

Testing it on the bench - it does not seem to work with the GPS. I have power to both the camera and the receiver - in low light the IR LEDS glow and the receiver does provide power to the GPS. When I plug the lead into the AV port of the GPS with power on to the reversing camera nothing happens.

So does in fact the camera override the GPS or does the function have to be turned on first.

Any advice?? Unfortunately I do not have any monitors that use the same small AV plug as the reversing camera to test the camera on something else.

Thanks

Garry

Works fine for me. Just put power to the camera and the screen flips to the camera.

The receiver plug to the unit is a 2.5mm 4 conductor.

I have a 7" unit and the socket is 3.5mm so you need an adapter available here (http://cgi.ebay.com/Nokia-AD-53-AD53-Stereo-Audio-Adapter-3-5-2-5-mm-KH2-/160452027873?cmd=ViewItem&pt=AU_MobilePhoneAccessories&hash=item255bafa5e1#shId).

Thanks - the camera receiver has a 2.5mm plug and the GPS has a 2.5mm AV socket.

Doesn't work as a rear view camera when plugged in. I will try to get an adaptor form Jaycar to change the 2.5mm plug to RCA video and test the camera on my TV so to find out if it is the camera or GPS that is not working.

Don't know what to suggest.
I have the same GPS and Camera and it just works.
Hope you can get it going.

Hi Garry,

As Miky has stated it seems it must be a 4 conductor 2.5mm plug.

I had been fart arsing around with a couple of different plugs, the standard mono and stereo plugs to no avail. Checked out some of the comments on DealExtreme and saw a couple mentioning that the 4 conductor is needed.

The NTSC camera I ordered has an RCA plug so I'm using a RCA - 3.5mm adaptor and then this DealExtreme: $1.26 4-Pin 2.5mm to 3.5mm Stereo Audio Jack Convertor (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3541)
to drop it down to 2.5mm

Hopefully I'll have the plugs in the next day or to to validate the claim....

Sorry - I do not under stand the issue with the connectors - my receiver has a four conductor 2.5mm plug and the GPS has a 2.5mm AV socket. I have checked the specs of the GPS and it does not mention how many "conductors" the socket is.

Not sure why the 2.5mm plug is 4 conductor anyway as I believe most RCA cables are effectively 2 conductor anyway.

Becuase it depends on which notch is for the video ;) could be wired differently??

I recently got a cam & GPS for a mate - I will be setting this up on the weekend so I'll post my guide in the main thread.

That is what I am beginning to think - I have checked the instructions for the Deals Extreme 5" GPS and there is no mention of AV port at all. Likewise the website information does not mention AV capability. However as mentioned in the questions section someone has said it does work. I also believe someone on AULRO said it works but I cannot find the post.

I went to jaycar to get some connector adaptors but none are of the four component variety and are audio rather that video.

The jack point on the GPS is AV so its internals are setup to recognise audio L & R, video and also has a common earth.

This is eqivalent to RCAs red, white and yellow. If memory serves me right yellow is video which relates to the 2nd last band from the tip. Ain't got a foggiest out it all susses out what the signal source is but apprently the plugging I'm going to use will be recognised.

Will let you know....

Hi Garry.

I have the same units worked straight out of the box.

Not sure of your test setup.

Are you aware that the cigarette lighter plug doubles as receiver and charges the gps at same time. So you will need to incorporate it when testing.

Dave.

Thanks Dave

I have the red and black leads on the camera connected to a 12v battery.

The receiver is connected to a 12v lighter socket with the USB power socket plugged into the GPS and the 4 component 2.5mm plug, plugged into the AV socket on the GPS.

In this test setup the tx and the rx are close by - maybe they are too close - I will check with them a few meters apart.

Interestingly the camera Tx has an aerial but the Rx does not have one.

That's what I thought - how on earth can this work...

But it does. I assume the cig. lighter plug has a built in antenna.

The antenna will no doubt be via a core in the cable, similar to the FM transmitter.

I'm wanting to install my reversing camera on the Defender, but I'm not sure where to put it. Anyone installed one on a Defender, and if so, where did you put it and wire it into?

Is this Ranga system one of these units that uses WiFi to transmit the video signal?

My workmate's Land cruiser has one, but don't know the brand and she finds when she is driving home the video monitor on a neighbours front door gets displayed on her screen as she drives by.

I wonder if the same would happen if two units were reversing in the same carpark? :(

If so, I'd be wanting to have a bit of copper between the camera and the screen to be sure!

Garry, if WiFi the antenna may be inside the unit.

I located my Camera on my 130 cab Chassis on the rear cross member set so that I include the tow ball in the picture to help when hitching up a trailer.

Power for the camera and the reverse line are taken from the Reverse alarm (Beeper).

I'm thinking about using the cross-member also, so I can see the tow hitch. I'm also toying with the idea of using a switch to power it up, so I can turn it on whilst I'm driving along, but I think this might be overkill.

Also, I wonder how waterproof they are? I might apply some silicone to mine to keep it from getting damaged.

I'm interested to see if anyone with a 110 wagon has fitted one yet.

In my 110 I fitted the camera on one side of the reverse light. Works very well and it is well protected.

After the installation something went wrong so I returned the unit to the supplier for exchange.

Try to hold the camera with tape and see what you think about this location ;)

I have given up on this.

I have tried various connectors and nothing seems to work. I am beginning to think the AV hole on the GPS is just a dummy though the product website seems to indicate it works.

I want a reversing camera for the 101 but not at the expense of having a dedicated screen. I already have the GPS, my fan, my mobile and my UHF handset already hanging off the windscreen so dont want any other screens.

It would be nice to have the camera working through the GPS though.

Stop The Press

After putting up the previous post I went over to pack everything up as it is scattered across my lounge room.

Well I thought I will just plug it in one more time - as the GPS was booting up a flash of something odd came onto the screen then disappeared. Hmmm what was that. I jingled a few things and nothing - oh well must have been imagining things - then it appeared again - this time for longer - a picture of my loungeroom with two yellow lines on it - yep it was the rear camera. Then lost it - jiggled the AV lead on the GPS and it was back - so seems there is an issue with the connectors inside the GPS - with more playing the longer it stayed on - so it does basically work but I have a connector issue. I will pull the GPS apart later and clean up the contacts and tighten them up a bit.

I was quite impressed with the camera - it was dark in the room and the IR leds in the camera were on - can easily see across the room in the dark and can see the reflection of the IR leds on the white ceiling of the room - resolution was quite good - with lights on and blinds open the quality of the colour images was also very good.

I find it amazing that I have had this thing for a couple of months and could not get it to work - spent about $15 on different connectors at the computer fair this morning - none of them worked. Maybe plugging them in and out improved connectivity.

Cheers

Garry

GPS is back in the 101 and set up the camera at the rear. With the transmitter underneath there is not enough signal strength to get through the body work to provide a decent signal at the GPS. The interference is so great that there is no picture just snow.

However lift up the transmitter above the rear tray so that it is basically 'line of sight' with the receiver and it works quite well giving a good picture day or night.

So while the camera needs to be placed outside, some consideration needs to be given to where the transmitter is placed - thankfully there is a reasonable amount of cable between the camera and transmitter to give a few options.

My brother recently bought a $300 wireless reversing camera system for his Triton and he found the same - there was too much sheetmetal in the bodywork for a decent signal to be received so he had to make his system a wired system rather than wireless.

Chucaro,
I'm just about to install the same camera but not sure about where the wiring for the reverse light comes through? Is it internal or along the chassis? Any photos .
I'm think g that I'll put it in place of the rear washer so I can see everything and easier to reverse the trailer.
If anyone has mounted it in this spot can u post me some photos of how u mounted it?
Thanks
Jake
