View Full Version : Key won't turn past accessory

My week is just getting so much better... NOT! :(:(:(

I presently have a serious health problem which the only thing I can do is basically recline in a chair and rest as much as possible, in other words do nothing and don't get stressed. The doctor's given me time off until next Wednesday and I have at least 2 follow up visits in the mean time. If I was to work on the car I'd probably pass out or drop dead!

...and so my wife, who has been given time of work to look after me, took the Defender down town to buy some groceries. Got back to the Defender to find the ignition key wouldn't turn past accessory position. Dale (Stuuu) came to help and drove her home, I went back with her (I can't drive at present) and tried with some graphite powder. No luck. Back home and call in a few forum favours. I think we all agree the ignition barrel is stuffed:(

The car is nose in perpendicular parked in the local shopping car park. I don't know how we can get it out if we can't drive it:(

Call LR Assist and I must say the initial call left me unimpressed but anyway they offered a solution and asked me to call back. Wife went back down town and tried but no luck. Call LR Assist back and got a very helpful person. He did as much as he could and referred me to LR Aust. Called them and told them the issue, they then called back and it's now in the hands of the local workshop (Toyota dealer) to try and recover and repair.

So anyway, I was very please with LR and LR Assist and now just have to get it fixed. Remember I am in a very remote are and there is no dealer within 1100km which they were able to listen to what I had to say and work with me for towards a solution.

So now back to not worrying or being stressed and doing nothing but relaxing Will post up what the problem ends up being.

Thanks: Stuuu, Scallops, one_iota, Sniegy, Justinc, Bundalene

Had a 'similar' problem with my Disco when the key wouldn't turn at all. Problem related to worn tumblers and key which was made worse by the other keys on the key ring weighing the ignitian key down. Try just with the single key with no other keys attached.

Thanks but only ever have two keys and a small key ring for the cars. Don't want heaps of keys jangling around when off road for starters.

Derek,

Hope it works out easily with the Fender.

More importantly hope you are well soon.

(It was good to speak today)

Sorry to hear you are not well Derek :( I hope you get through it soon.

Not that it helps, but my '08 110 had 2 ignition barrels because they were sticking....

Cheers,

Dale tells me the car got back to the workshop - towed :BigCry:

Already had one phone call that started with: "Was that your Land Rover?"

Did I mention it's a small town and there is only 4 Puma's in town. One white one, two Stornaway Grey ones and my Zermatt Silver one.

Now if it had been a white Toyota, no one would have noticed

I know this sounds REALLY silly, but did anybody consider it could have been the steering lock that wasn't retracting?

Yes, and it wasn't. I actually made sure the lock engaged and was able to turn the key to accessory to release it.

Mornin' D and B.

Hope you are getting better Derek, it was good to talk to you yesterday, and I hope the ignition issue is only a lock/tumblers failure.

Stay relaxed:)

Thanks Dan, spoke to Gove Motors this morning and they are arranging a replacement barrel from LR. Neither of us are sure if this means an entire lock set or not. We both suspect it does though. Anyway they are in touch with LR and it's not a difficult fix once the part(s) arrive.

On the health side there's not much improvement today. Just got back from the Doctor's and have a change in medication (read additional pills) to take over the weekend. Just have to sit, relax and do nothing.

Hi Derek, Here's our very best wishes to you for an improvement in your condition. The Landy comes second...

Will give you a call over the weekend when we return home from the South Coast. In the meantime relax and do what the Doc advises.

All the very best to you both,
Erich & Sheila

When I had my ignition barrel(s) replaced I gave LR my spare key so the new barrel(s) could be "key'd" to be the same as the original.

hope your feeling better Derek,as previously mentioned the garage can build the barrel to your original key so you won't have to have a 'jailers' key ring

Had an issue where the ignition would stay at on after a start. Whip the dash out (4 phillips) and pull, wiggle and roll the dash out of the way (leave cables connected).

The ignition switch unit sits on top of the steering column. On my TD5 130 the back of the switch had the white plastic insert with all the terminals had worked its way loose from the 'crimping tabs'. I was able to reset two of the tabs and it all work well for a while.

Eventually I has to take the whole unit out, which is a pain because of the security bolts (shear variety) that hold the switch to the steering column. Two minutes with a dremel to create screwdriver slots and I was in business to take the switch out a sort it good and proper.

Even if the fault isn't like mine, this would give you a chance to take the lock off the ignition switch and provide a jury rig to get going again.

Hi Derek,

Sorry to hear that your'e not well.

I had a similar prob with my Puma (not being able to turn the key) and I remembered from somewhere that the puma has a "locking mechanism" in the barrel to stop you turning the key to start when the engine is already running and hurting the starter motor. I ended up disconnecting the battery, everything "reset" and it was all good.

Sorry that I'm a bit late with the info. Get well soon

Craig

Thanks Craig, I'll pass that on but I suspect it's not the case. The barrel has been sticky for most of this year and some lubrication worked before so I think it has been slowly failing.

Health is improving, had a good check up this morning and hope to be back at work Wednesday:)

Good to hear you on the mend, are you still in Gove? I've moved up from Broome to Darwin. Was in Gove on Sunday, had to fly a mob of locals up from Numbalwar.

Yes, still in Gove, Craig. Good to hear another Defender owner has moved to the NT;)

As for the Puma, LR have provided a new lock set and keys. Just has to be fitted which should be today.

I'm very surprised as I was worried about how LRA was going to handle this and I have to say that everything was handled very well. I can't complain about it taking over a week to fix as it happened close to a weekend and there is freight delays involved with anything to Gove. The only thing that could have shaved a day or two of the time was if Gove Motors was still a service agent like in the old days and could have got things direct from LRA.

My wife will be very happy not to be driving the Tdi around. My health has turned a corner and improved a lot in the last three days. They still don't know why but I'm able to get around and was able to get back to work again.

So all things considered it's been a very good week:D

Several months back I increased the antenna length on the Puma's alarm only to find it did nothing to improve things :( Still a very short distance before the fob would be acknowledged.

Now, after getting the car back from having the new lock set installed, I can unlock it from about 20m away :confused:

Now that's an improvement:D

So I suspect there must have been something loose that was rectified by the new ignition lock. The same immobiliser ring is in use though but of course everything was taken off to replace the lock. The driver's and back door locks were also exchanged and I have new key's but the same fob.

So I guess it may be worth investigating under the steering column covers if your fob range is limited.

Read about the antenna fix but my March build 2010 110 station wagon has great fob range. Never had any problems.
