View Full Version : PROVENT BULK PURCHASE

5th August 2010, 08:30 PM
Ladies & Gentleman, I have access to Mann+Hummel product direct. Along with this comes access to the ProVent 200 of which I have uploaded the brochures in the files section.
Although mainly designed for those in WA, anyone interested in a group buy, please contact me.
I would like to do an initial purchase of 15-20 units with an estimated price at this stage of $165.00 each hopefully including the check valve for the return drain. I'm still haggling on the price.
No hoses, clamps or other ancillary products are included and each person will need to source their own items.
I am looking into what is generally required to complete an install and will post this up to help those to source items.
Anyone in WA regional area or interstate, I can dispatch to you but freight will be at your expense.
Money will have to be paid before sending it out. I will contact you when ready.
Serious buyers only please, no tyre kicking or changing your mind on this one.
Please respond by posting here and I will PM you individually.
I will advise when I am ready to start taking orders.
Regards
Andrew

ONYA Andrew.
I will put my hand up for one to put in the Defender.
PEOPLES,these things are very good,I have one in the D2.Since installing there is no more oil polluting the intercooler, can only be good for turbo/engine lifespan.I have no hesitation fitting a second unit to our Defender!!!
Thanks

Online at Western Filters the Provent 200 is $178 and check valve $20.

Good to see some interest in this, guys please dont mess Andrew around with the money when it comes time to order. It can really leave a sour taste in ones mouth when one goes out of there way to help others only to get messed around awaiting payments.
Andrew, the best way to sort the postage is in a Express Post bag.
Has worked very well for me in the past.

Express bags are cheap and the don't weigh much. Waiting on box dimensions so I can work out which size I need.
Getting the items in bulk to me is free. The only freight will be postage to those in regional areas or who can't get to me to pickup.

Not at the moment no, however I think they are around the $90 mark retail, so I would say about $70 each off the top of my head. Dont mind ordering if you need them.

Hi Andrew,
I had a quick look at the file you linked.
Why have you gone for the Provent 200? It seems a bit overkill for a 200/300Tdi or a TD5.
The Provent 150 would seem a better size for our motors, a 100 would just do my stock 300Tdi.
Thanks
Tony

The 200 will do up to 200kW engines. As there are various outputs, in particular the TD5 if its chipped which will reach 200kW, keeping it to one size makes it easier to keep the price down and also the fact they dont keep the 100 or 150!
Also, with a larger capacity unit, it will also produce better results for quite a bit longer before needing any kind of servicing. A larger chamber will keep the can velocity quite a bit lower resulting in better condensation of the oil mist and less physical load on the filter element.

I just had a look in the engine bay  ... and a look around the forum ... ...
... and it seems D2 owners have been mounting the Provent 200 against the passengers side fire wall ... I have the aux' battery there :( ... there _might_ be room under the tray, but it's inaccessible unless the battery tray's removed (major exercise - Disco has rear A/C !), and it's pretty close to the exhaust ... mounted here leaves no access to service the Provent (sigh) ...
A quick measure up shows a 2L coke bottle cut about 35mm below the label and then inverted is the "approx'" size (110dia x 220height) ... this will poke down between the PS reservior, strut tower, and intake hose from the airbox to the turbo ... god only knows where the plumbing will have to/can be run to ... and the drain ... and a bracket to install/mount it ... :( ... can't move the aux' battery to the SLS compressor tray ... it has SLS fitted. Can't move the battery to the rear storage bins as it's a 7 seater ... no bins.
Any words of wisdom or advice from the collective about my chances of installing the Provent 200 in this position ... 'cause that's the ONLY spot left in the engine bay I can see as being close to useable ...
HELP! :(

Pretty sure Ive seen pics of a D2 with the provent next to the power steer where the Ace reservior was.It would have only been on AULRO if that helps.Second battery was the reason for putting it there.
Reservior may have been shifted slightly to do so.

Have seen a pic of one installed where the unit was mounted onto a heatshield made for the second battery.
These units are made from glass reinforced nylon. It's the same plastic your radiator is made from so heat is not an issue for it unless it comes in contact directly with a hot exhaust.
They also don't HAVE to be mounted straight. They will happily take an angle up to 45deg.

Andy, I found the D2a install you mentioned (must be going blind!) ... it was Baz/Redback. Same position I'm considering. It's a squeeze, but looks do-able with some pre planning.
Andrew, that's a position I didn't consider. Will take another under the hood tomorrow night. Thanks for the heads up on the material.I know the stuff as Noryl ... we have pumps that use similar material for casings.
... thanks guys, I feel alot more confident now that I can get it to fit.

The "difficult" thing is, you MUST mount it so that oil will drain (downhill) to whereever you are draining to. If you decide to join into the turbo drain pipe, be very careful about where you apply heat, so as not to damage the rubber in the hose.
Mines here:http://www.aulro.com/afvb/members-rides/106557-hamishs-d2a-overhaul-3.html
I couldnt get it any higher, and the return line is just "down hill".
I have it on my list of things to do to make a custom turbo drain pipe so I can tee in the provent much lower. I've heard it can take about 5000km or so before oil actually starts to drain, so Ive got some time to do it.

I have thought about just making an oil catch can, like used in racing sedans. But this looked the Bee's Knees.
Im thinking that I won't plumb the oil return in, at least not straight away. But rig up a small bottle to catch it, so I can monitor how much oil is being lost to the breather.

So when is the price finalised?
Had a wrangle with Main office in Melbourne. They were trying to get the pricing through Hella Australia who coincidently just picked them up Monday this week as a distributor. Mann and Hella are now part of the same main company but separate entities. Anyhoo, the idiot in Melbourne hasn't got back to me after repeated calls so I'm going direct to Mann and bypassing my Daimler account. All I need to do is get a direct account re initialized and it should all be go.
I do apologize for the delay but have had head knob ends from Mercedes Melbourne over here this week telling us how to run the dealership despite not being able to supply the stock to do so..... *****.....
OK, so by my count, so far we have a qty of 32 ProVents and 4 filter elements!!

For the provent element, haven't been able to find any suggested service intervals but I guess it depends on how much of a breather you have.
As far as I can tell, it's a wrapped coal filter so technically there's nothing stopping you from using a solvent to clean it.
If you use mineral oil, I would expect it to clag quicker than synthetic which by rights actually shouldn't as it doesn't varnish like mineral. I use syn so not going to bother with a spare element yet.
I can get for around the $70ish mark I think. I would assume with the amount of Provents, a good price will be forthcoming.
Roverrescue and slugburner both want them so I will put you down for a price.
Cheers

I have final pricing for all items!
PROVENT - $168.50 (includes check valve)
FILTER ELEMENT - $72.00
Postage will be no more than $12 per parcel.
For those ordering vents and elements, they most likely will have to be packaged separately as the postage is based on 500g-1kg parcel, Provent aparently weighs approximate 500grams.
PLEASE CONFIRM YOUR ORDER BY THIS FRIDAY 27th AUGUST.
I need to cut off by this date to place the order Monday 30th.
I will start sending PM's tonight to those who have registered. You will need to send back your name and postal address and a preference for a credit card. This is by far the easiest method as my accounts is at another building and I don't have easy access to bank transfers.
I will probably round off the volume to 40 vents and 15 elements which I will keep here but this will depend on final confirmed orders.
Thankyou all for the interest and I hope this will all bring a smile to your faces next time your crossing off "clean intercooler" from your service list!!!
Regards to all

You can if you like but I need to transfer it to the business account anyway.
What I can do is give you the company bank details and your invoice ref number but you WILL need to state this number when doing the transfer AND send a copy thru. I don't mind doing this but it is a pain for me to follow up later if I have a number of them to do.
With a card, we just punch in the numbers and it's done.

Many thanks for your effort.
I have just replied to your PM with address but like others I should have requested a spare filter as well, if thats not to much trouble.
I note that your Disco is the same model as mine (Td5 D2a 2003)- has there been a "project" on fitting the Provent to this model?
Once again thanks for your time and effort.

Have been getting a few messages from those wanting to know payment details for direct deposits.
I wont be messaging details for the account until I actually have generated the invoices. Reason being, my accountant will give me grief for not being able to allocate deposits to invoices and it complicates my reconcilliation process if it comes in too early. This is why CC is better for us. I am trying to have cash removed as an option at the moment due to the hassle it is to handle.
As soon as invoices are raised, I will let everyone concerned know. Dont spend it in the meantime!!

Just a quick update, spoke to Mann today wondering what was happening. They have an issue with their system issuing a COD invoice. Aparently since changing to the German linked system, COD is harder to do as its account oriented.
Due to the fact i have had to bypass my Daimler account, COD is the only way without a long drawn out account application process.
Hopefully next week it will be go.
I test invoiced LandyAndys order today and got it to go thru without stock available so will continue with all the direct debits tomorrow.
I will email those paying this way tonight with the bank details and my work email to send the transfer receipt to.

Being a bulk purchase, i wont get the same price for individual lots but i may look at this again in 6 months or so. How, did you moove the PS steering tank back 20mm (towards the air intake on the inner guard ?)
Second, is it possible to post a photo looking across the bonnet (from passengers side) instead of overhead ? How high up do you have the top of the PV sitting ?
... as it stands now, there aint_much_room ....
Thanks

Will try and get another photo tommorrow. Drilled out the spot welds on the bracket for the PS tank and rebolted it closer to the inner guard. Just below the Bracket for the power steering tank bracket there were 2 unused bolt holes so I used these to fix the bracket that I welded up to hold the provent, it is then braced to the ABS module. very tight fit but its not touching or rubbing on anything.

No real info on how long. Every engine will breath differently with differing rates of oil vapour.
I guess when the inlet side of the filter starts to pool oil in it and even then i would assume you may be able to solvent clean it.
I wouldnt say you wouldnt need to replace inside 80-100,000kms.
Maybe send a message to Isuzurover as he was doing R&D for Mann on these a few years ago. He had a limited number that were free providing you returned tech info to him. He may be able to give you some idea.
As i think he did have quite a few who just took the freebee and provided no feedback, it may be a good idea for all who have just bought one to ask Ben for his sheet and send regular updates. I plan to as Ben has helped out many AULRO members and deserves the respect he has shown to others.
Gotta go, motox and bmx freestyle about to start down here at the Perth Royal Show!!

Went for a run to warm it up a bit, came back and took the cap off to see exactly how much mist it develops.... :o :o
A lot into the unit, absolutely nothing from the return! :) :) :)
Next job will be pulling intercooler out which should have been yesterdays job if it wasnt for the starter motor crapping the start solenoid.

Looking good mate. Are you going to plumb the oil drain into somewhere? Turbo oil return line? Centrifuge return pipe? I've got all the other connections covered but I am unsure on this one. Either way a hole would need to be drilled into the line and soldered in place. I'm thinking of just fitting a long clear plastic tube to it with a bung in the end and draining periodicly.

Robbo.

Just a quick question regarding the one way valve,
Does it need to be mounted vertically or can it be put in line at an angle or horizontal?
May have already been answered but I couldn't find it.

I don't think it matters it works on gas flow direction.

I was thinking of fitting a small drink bottle to the drain of mine. But after a week of driving to work and no sign of any oil yet, I might just put a longer drian hose and loop it. Or just fit a small pill bottle to the end.

I have mine with a piece of 13mm poly plugged until i can get another turbo oil drain line. Rather than butcher the existing and make a mistake, i'm going to get a new one and play with it a bit. I think its going to take time to really start collecting anything.
I'm still in two minds as to whether to just drill ot straight into the sump on its own line when i do the next oil change. Need to check the oil pump bolt anyway so kill 2 birds so to speak.

OK, a few details on fittings used. I was lucky enough to have a couple of lengths of 3/4 and 1" ID Purosil hose lying around at work :)
The only other addition was a 19mm retic poly connector. This is used for sticking inside the 19mm hose to provide a clamping point when fitting the 25mm hose over it.
For the mount, i started with a length of 20x5mm reinforced steel bar, however with a lack of appropriate gastorch and bending gear, i gave up and used a piece of scrap ally checkerplate from the trailer build.
This bent up pretty easy with nothing more than a hammer and rubber mallet. A few quick bends roughly in the right areas and being ally, was easy to get into the right shape.
The bracket mounts using the alarm horn and rollover switch screw points and needed no new hardware for it, however be carefull with the rollover switch as i did crack one of the screw mounts :(
Position the Provent onto the bracket, mark holes, drill, position vent spigots and bolt into position.
With the hose, cut each one to about half the length of each run. With the poly connector, cut the barb off each end, push into the 19mm hose where the 25mm will join it, then stick a hose clamp over it and lightly tighten.
Connect to the rocker cover and the PCV regulator on the turbo intake and its done!
Get the engine to normal run temp, take the cover off the Provent and see just how much mist actually comes thru.
Cheers

Anything surface mail that hits Darwin after midday Thursday waits another week to be put on the barge. Then it arrives here usually Mon/Tues and then in our mail boxes on the Wed arvo.

Ive covered about 600 since fitting it. Can just see the inside of the filter darkening.
The oil i have coming thru the "weeping weld" on my EGR replacement intake tube :( is getting less however. Might be broken, but its actually handy!

Yeah i know :/ its on my list of things. Thinking about having one milled up as one piece from billet. The one i have isnt really matched that well to the intake face as well. A mate of mines a boilermaker so i might give him the EGR one to match from and turn one up at his work.
Now the oil is thru the weld, it probably wont take very well to being redone.

Well at long last Aust Post has found and delivered my ProVent. Between slipping a note in my mailbox and returning to the post office it had gone missing. It was personally delivered to my wife today while she was at work (not too far from the post office).
One advantage is that I have seen all the clever ways in which people have mounted/fitted theirs so I dont have to think all that hard about fitting mine.
Thanks,

Done and dusted I'm afraid. Mann Hummel have changed their market setup and I can't get access to the industrial line which was direct. Automotive is now distributed thru Hella Australia but pricing isn't that flexible.
My account with them is via Mercedes Benz Australia so a few extra fingers are stuck in the pie.
You could try www.filterdiscounters.com.au and see what they can do or contact Hella for your local distributor.
