Hi All,
Some further symtoms from today:
- vehicle started ok
- as soon as l went to disengage clutch - vehicle turned off and TEMP gauge goes to HOT and FUEL guage goes to FULL.
- I tried starting again - same thing.
Now as soon as l go to acessories the gauges just do as above and the vehicle will now not start at all.
When in this 'mode' - the fuel pump is not pumping as normal on acesories.
Ideas?
Is it earths as above post....any specifici ones or check ALL???
Ta,
Mike

First thing I'd check is for oil in the injector loom, pull the red plug off the ECU and check for oil.
Second would be the fuel sensor, they can come loose.
Third would be the throttle sensor thingy.

Mike, had this similar issue with a 2000 110. Turned out to be earths under drivers seat next to ABS and engine ECU's.
Both were loose :0

I had a few earth problems when i first got my td5 back together...
After mucking around with a test light for a few hours, i got all the right sign's from the test light.
but still no fuel pump. in a last ditched idea i swapped ecu's and there was sweet sound of my fuel pump.
Maybe having a bad earth on the ecu caused it to fry?

Thanks Guys
I'll have a look under drivers seat - tha sounds quite possible.
I wouldn't of thought an ECU would 'fry' itself if un-earthed?? (Here's hoping anyway)

Its generally due to a higher current draw from the bad earth or spikes caused by the connection arcing when the connection is disturbed.
Its always worth spraying earth connections with something like Würth battery terminal spray after cleaning and reconnecting. Very good idea if the connections are external and prone to wet conditions regularly.

Hi Guys
Are the earths under the drivers seat obvious? Are they like a standard earth lead? i.e. bolted to chassis style? Or somehting more "pretty".
Just want to know what ot look for exactly.
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Guys
There is a presence of oil in the RED plug. Very little - l really need air to blow into plug to see how much oil comes out - but l assume plug should be dry and no oil present at all?
I remember this occuring with my 99 TD5 Disco (You'd think Rover would have solved this issue 2006????!!!!)
I'll look up thread related to oil in injector hanrness now!
Thanks for help.

Hi All
Gave the RED plug a good clean with contact cleaner last night. Worked a treat. THe Defender is running again.
There is def oil in the BLUE plug under the engine cover - so l assume that means l need to change the injector loom harness. IS that right?

correct, be sure to flush the engine bay side harness as well. theres a handfull of threads on the oil in the harness fault and a couple of them deal with it.
a hand full of part suppliers (all of the ones I use) supply the "modified" replacement injector harness. Once you've seen the replacement you can work out how to do the mod yourself clean out your old harness and then keep it around to ensure murphy shows no further interest in your injector loom.

Ta.
Just having a read of those threads! My goodness.....
My Defender only done 106,000kms. I will call LRA Monday and speak tih someone about the problem. Considering this happened in 99 to me TD5 Disco - one would hope LR had sorted it by now...
