Just found out Lakota has a partly torn cruciate ligament - if it tears completely we are up for a $3000 operation.
Bloody cheap dog not so cheap after all...
This has put paid to my planned Lake Eyre trip during September holidays, and leaves me wondering where I'll find the dough if I have to. (Bloody hope it heals itself, but history is not good for us in this kind of situation!)
:( :( :( :( :(

Sorry about your dog situation Vlad.
Thought John Williamson's Budgie Song might cheer you up:
Well it cost me thirty bucks to fix my budgie,
When the little blighter only cost me five.
The veterinary surgeon saw me coming,
But I had to keep my feathered friend alive;
He was shaking on his perch, the kids were crying,
The family gathered round his little cage.
I said I think it's time we got a new one,
that's when the family went into a rage.
Oh, the waiting room ponged like a rat house,
With heartworms and lungworms and lice.
And a Persian had her eye on the shoebox,
I suppose she thought our budgie might be nice.
Well the bird **** on the veterinary surgeon,
I heard him say the dirty little chick.
Guess he wondered why I didn't use my brains
And hit him over the head with a brick.
[Chorus:]
Oh antibiotics for his colour,
Two drops a day on his beak.
Some powder on the nose for his feathers
And clean out his cage twice a week.
Well it cost me thirty bucks to fix my budgie
When the little blighter only cost me five
And the bludger wakes me early in the morning,
it's got me puzzled how he survives.
One night I'll feed him to the tom cat.
Instead of worrying about him when we go away.
No-one wants to feed a ****ty budgie,
When everyone's on holiday.
Cheers

Hmm, only if I wanted a divorce.
I have my shooting / rifles / other toys.
Mrs Vlad spends money on animals.
Who am I to say no?

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Your voice is the world's sweetest music as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps fall upon my waiting ear.
I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshipper.
Keep me well, so I may romp and play and do your bidding, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.
And, beloved master, should the great waster see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather, hold me gently in your arms as your skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest, and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I draw, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

If it makes you any better my dog fell off the back of my nissan ute in remote WA(sold it- bought my 110) when he was 10 months old... fractured his rear left leg in 7 places.. was told they could save it for around $3000.. well to cut a very long story short... ended up costing me $12,000 in flights, drugs, vet operations & boarding. He now has Titanium Rods & Plates, 7 Titanium screws & 5 titanium ties. Very Impressive Xray. And a year later he is running around as happy as a pig in... well very brown stuff... and I wouldn't trade him for the world. Although he now has Pet Insurance through Medibank which costs me $250 a year i think... and they pay for upto (yup you guessed it) $12,000 for any one injury.
And he's a mixed mutt i rescued from the pound.

My old pig dog, mastif/boxer cross departed this world a few months ago.
3 years previous she snapped the ligaments in her right rear knee.
The otherside wasn't much better as it was all busted up years ago as well.
They suggested the long sleep trick but I said no.
Ok they said, take her home & keep her quiet & you might get another 3 months out of her.
Anyway after a couple of weeks laying around, I said to her "time for a walk mate"
She was a bit stiff to start off with but after 3 weeks she was actually running again. The ligaments healed themselves according to the vet.
Dogs are incredible compared to humans when it comes to adapting so don't write your little mate of just yet as I got a healthy extra 3 years out of mine & she made 14 years which is ok for a big dog who had a hard life.

Hmmm. This may not make you feel any better, but a workmate explained his (read Wifes) dog had two stays in 'Doggie Hospital'...
Stay One - $9000.00 :eek:, Stay Two - $7000.00 :eek::eek:
Yup, $16k :Thump:
It was poison related.
Workmates comment - 'She's loves that dog'. Happy wife, happy life.
Matt.

My thoughts exactly should all be covered under insurance unless there has been injury to that leg before in which case it generally isn't covered.
and from my experience cruciates don't generally heal themselves sorry :(...has been a very common injury to some of our long term "big" dogs

Relatives of ours had a dog that had one hind leg repaired, cost 3K,six months later had to have the other done, also 3K.
Three years later it's aorta burst,& that was the end of it.
A vet once told me that the straighter a dogs hind leg is when it is standing, the more chance of it having ligament problems. Also if it jumps a lot,it is more likely to happen.
It is a common problem with Sharpei's,as their back legs are straighter than most breeds,if you know what i mean. That is don't have much of a dogs leg in the leg:angel:
Vlad,hope it all works out.....
