Hi Guys
Upgraded intercoolers for the TD5.(D2 and Defender)
How many of you guys are running the aftermarket types and which ones.
What sort of price did you pay and are you happy with it?????
I asked Tombie about a group buy on the ASE intercooler he reccomends but doesnt think its possible as they are a high labour content item. They sell for $1200 delivered.
How many are looking at buying an upgraded intercooler soon????
Im about to order and will be phoning ASE and possibly other suppliers in the next few days.
Let me know if you INTEND buying one SOON,will see if I can sort a discount if a few order at once.
Please keep the replys genuine,no point saying 10 of us want one and it turns out only 3 really do.
If you TDi owners are about to buy one to suit your Defender/D1,wouldnt hurt replying too.
Thanks
Andrew

Bought mine from TRS so can't tell you what specific variety it is.

Have one so don't need another one from the group buy sorry.

1. Don't know sorry.

2. Had an apprentice called Derek who helped out - spanners and all!

3. Yes and yes - although Derek had a bit of an issue fitting his into the D2a.

4. Yep. It was put in after the ECU upgrade and I believe it made an improvement. ECU + Intercooler makes towing a 1 ton camper a breeze.

Andy, they are a really good item, we have fitted both Defender and D2 ones and very happy. These engines really need them with the boost box and 20+psi boost

You won't be dissappointed. $1200 sounds about right, including freight.

Count me in!!

I've ordered an upgraded ECU, the EGR kit arrived today and after looking at my stock intercooler - am thinking (Wanting) I need better!......and that will include an upgraded turbo in the near future!!

I have a stock TD5 with no ancillaries and am determined the get the power plant sorted out before I start adding bullbar, winch etc, etc.

After my lifted, bar'd, draws, fridged, tyred but still stock engined D1.....which I was kore than happy with (Apart from the road performance) - I'll have a great TD5 workhorse that will be capable of just about every thing I want it to do....and it still only got 72,000K's;)

My gut feeling is go with the ASE unit. They are "LOCAL" for us if there is an issue. The UK imports are cheaper, but prefer local back-up.
Im willing to pay their full price,we may get them a bit cheaper if a bunch of us want them.

That td5 alive deal looks pretty good, but like Andy said ASC is local back up. LR series sells ungraded intercoolers for 380pounds I think, which is pretty good as well.

I have the ASE intercooler, I believe they use a PWR core, the TRS intercooler is the same product.

It will drop your EGTs by about 50 to 100 deg and allow you to increase your boost and with the addition of silicon hoses will make it more responsive off the mark, big help if towing and you have a manual, which I have.

I fitted mine myself, it's much easier if you remover the fan, this allows you to tilt the radiator back.

Rovacraft sell one as well.

I got mine from TD5 Alive in the UK. The price was much better. But I understand about buying local because I bought extened wheel arches from another company in the UK and they sent me D1 arches. The cost of shipping back to the UK and getting them replaced is just stupid.

But what I have got done is Bigger intercooler, silicone hoses, EGR removed, re-map and S/S exhaust. Its like driving a new car. I think its just as quick as my mates D3 and the L/100kms is better than before.

Thats my tuppence worth.

At 4 units I doubt they are willing to do a deal.
I will be in touch with ASE tommorow, happy to pay the $$$ for a Aussie company having a go.

Ive ordered an ASE intercooler today.
Due to the low levels of interest in a group buy I didnt try for a discount.$1200 delivered.

Andy, how much difference is there between the D2a updated CAC and these performance wise??

Its not on my list of things at present and i have to be content with a flush and a Provent as I'm saving the coin for a Tombiesaurus and Nanocom Evo (if it ever comes out and is priced.... ;)) then the suspension, but it depends on how much of a gain its going to give me.
The D2a unit aparently is quite a big improvement over the original TD5 unit so the other bits are looking better.

The decats going on tomorrow and i might see if I can squeeze in a straight thru pipe next week.:cool:

Cheers

I don't know about the ASE units, but the good thing about the Td5 Alive units (apart from the good price) is that their finning comes in fine (road use, presumably more efficient cooling) and thick (offroad use, presumably so mud can be sprayed out without bending fins) versions.

If you've got a manual, the Td5Alive intercooler is huge at 4x original capacity.

With a mildish (TRS) non-flashable chip upgrade already in place, would you need to upgrade the ECU further if fitting an aftermarket intercooler - or can you just fit the IC and a boost box and everything else will adjust automatically via sensors?
