Have been a bit quiet of late... preparing for Cape York trip, including building a camper... more on that later. We should have left 3 weeks ago :wasntme: (well in fact it is me...).

Almost all packed and left Rangie on driveway last couple of nights...heavy rain...wheel well totally flooded. Replaced seal today. Baked it at 40degC for 30 mins and bent bottom lip of boot aperture out 5mm ,...both as per LR TSB.

Also realigned the upper tailgate and adjusted lock strikers on lower tailgate. Seem very tight... Damnation...still leaking, not as bad. Water is getting in somewhere above the tailgate split line and dripping into the taillight void. From there it fills up the bulkhead below the lip of the bootspace (immediately below the lip but above the bumper bar bolt attachment line.

No point drilling weep holes...I need to stop the leak!
I also removed the E pillar vinyl finisher, took out the bolt which supports the gas strut and put a dab of silicone on the thread and refitted it ...water seems to be finding its way down the E pillar ...or so i thought
Suggestions pls? fast running out of brownie points :(
cheers

The sunroof drains go through the top of the inner rear wheel arch. If the tips block up, then the water drains into the spare wheel well. The hoses can also pull out of the tips resulting in the same problem.

Pop off the upper side trims (under the rear 1/4 windows) & have a look.

That's where mine was filling up from anyway.

You've already done all of the things I did.....

Except it seemed to work for me.

I had a fair bit of surface rust in the wheel well, so I sanded it back, masked it up, and painted it with a mat black rust converter paint. Looks so much better and hard to tell its not originally painted that way.

Good luck

Dave

Gday all; my wheel-well leak was cured by gluing the rubber molding around the hatch body flange. Factory fit is only push-on,and seems to relax with age. Many cars I looked over in saleyards were full of water, probably from enthusiastic gernying.Good tip re the sunroof drain, and how to get at it.Hope this solves somebody else's "challenge".

Good point. My rubber seal had come right away but it was in quite good nick so I re attached it with a continuous bead of silicone gutter sealant on the lip before pushing it in place.

Ok, why can't I find this rear sunroof drain??! Do I need to remove the wheel arch to see it?

The rear sunroof drains consist of a length of translucent plastic hose on each side running down the (rear) seat belt pillars and end in a grommet exiting into the top of each wheel arch. You need to remove the vertical side covers of the luggage compartment as well as the "top" (horizontal) plastic sections.

To find the exit hole, you need to jack up the car, remove the rear wheel and remove the mudflaps and then the wheel arch liner... good luck!

Have you played with a hose, moving upwards to eliminate seam seals etc?

One problem you can have:

A length of Cat 6 ethernet cable (the actual cable you would install internally, not a lead) is perfect for running down the drain tubes to check and clear blockages.

That's what I found anyway.

G'Day Hoges,

I have had the same problem and found it was water coming from a poor seal on both rear side windows. The Robot putting the seal on the body during manufacture got it wrong and there is a gap in the sealant at the top of the glass. It can't be seen as it's underneath the trim. Difficult to fix without having the glass removed and resealed. I've pumped excess sealant in one side but not a total success. Head lining needs removal to get good access.

Look for water tracks down the inside of those windows.

Good luck with it and hope the Cape trip is a ripper!

Thank you for your kind thoughts Ozzyal...[bigsmile1] you seem to have fallen into the same 'trap for young players' that I have on occasion...my post is 10yrs old! I would spend hours reading posts, get thoroughly absorbed, offer a comment, then find the world h ad moved on...usually by several years!! [bighmmm][bigrolf]
We did the Cape Trip in Oct 2010 and the P38 'blitzed it'.... I later discovered the leak was due to water seeping in through panels under the rear bumper which hadn't been properly sealed following a minor rear end collision suffered by a previous owner. Once I'd sorted that it stayed bone dry in the heaviest of Qld summer rains! The vehicle is now in the safe hands of a fellow AULRO member in Tasmania

Hahaha!

That's funny!
I'm not a regular forum kind of dweller, life too busy for that, I spend most of my time in the workshop. Oh well, glad Cape York was a good trip for you, I'm planning on taking our P38 down to Tas once they let us in again. Got family farms up in the North West and family shack way down the West Coast. Great 4x4 driving.

Cheers,
Alan
