Hi all, I have a new product available, Discovery One Steering Guard. They are zinc coated and powder coated Black and made from 6mm steel, they are Laser cut and computer control folded to the right shape.

If any read the 4wd Action Guide No. 31 page 44 - 52 you might have seen the steering guard and recovery points on Dave "Busman" modified and lifted Discovery.
After a lot of testing Dave was impressed.
We now offer the same style guard for sale.

we will offer a new style pair of recovery points to go with this guard also.
The recovery points are zinc coated and painted red. These are also in the "recovery points discovery 1 and 2" thread also in verandah.

If as everyone says the disco 1 is the same chassis as the RRC then it will fit. The new recovery points wont be ready for a week so will post up a pic when get them back from the powder coaters.
Might try to do a photo of a guard on the 77 RRC in the front yard.

This is a reply to a members question, I hope it will be helpful to others,

Question:
"I have an Outback Accessories Australia (Opposite Lock) bullbar on my D1, and am a bit concerned as to whether it will fit or not. Also, have you considered making the guard a 3 piece to make accessing winches etc easier after installation?"

Answer "We have a winch cradle designed and a test under way for D1, Access to a winch should be designed into the winch bar not the steering guard as it is to protect everything from underneath, I have not heard of anyone else having any access problems to the winch. as to if it will fit, you could measure from outside of chassis distance and let me know, maybe post a couple of pics of your mount points for your bullbar, should be approx 810mm outside to outside.
We went away from the 3 piece as it is cost prohibitive and I would have to retail approx $300 to $340. I believe my design is stronger than a 3 piece too, as there is no welding or screws to hold it together.
We are working on a winch cradle for a discovery and defender that can be bolted on together with the steering guard. It might be ready in a couple of months. As all this takes time and i work fulltime during the day so this is all spare time design work."

Also to add to this discussion:
The same steering guard as an import from the UK is sold locally anywhere from $300 to $400 and is usually a 3 piece, my aim was to make a locally designed and manufactured product that is of a high quality and support local industry. I have imported a lot of different product from asia and the UK over the last few years and while most is ok, I sometimes feel embarrassed to sell the items i would not trust the quality or aftermarket service of them.
So i have a warehouse with a lot of stuff i have not sold.
Might have a garage sale sometime to clear out.
I firmly believe now we can make and sell better quality products here in Australia locally made and as cheaply as the imported products.
I support our local economy, do you?

Cool,

I assume the bar will fit OK with a TJM bull bar?
Will i have to buy any new bolts or anything?

Cheers,

philco
1st February 2011, 08:51 PM
Yes you will have to buy new bolts, it will fit ok, the bolts will have to be upgraded to 12mm high tensile is my recommendation.

Chappelle
2nd February 2011, 01:20 PM
Any chance you can supply those, id be happy to pay a bit extra

Chappelle
17th February 2011, 01:55 PM
No? where can i get the bolts from if you cant?

philco
17th February 2011, 11:42 PM
Your local nut and bolt shop or Bunnings will have high tensile bolts and nylock nuts, i prefer not to supply as some cars have recovery points as well.

Do you still have guards available for Defenders ('97 tdi)?, if not when do you think you may do some more?
Not in a hurry, so happy to wait until development on the Disco guards is complete.
Thanks, Martin

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate the point about prices.
As i have had a lot of family and work issues over the last 2 years i had not renewed the VENDOR membership for the items i have had for sale. I did not really think it was fair to Dave to accept orders or post up prices and i had not renewed my VENDOR membership.
I have now renewed my VENDOR membership and will post up prices in the coming weeks.
I have been getting stock ready to sell but as it is a lot of money to outlay it has taken a little while to raise the money and get the items into production.
I dont make crap or cut corners on quality, and if anyone has an idea to improve my products i am happy to discuss with them improvements.
I do everything out of my shed at home so please be patient while i set things going again.
Thank you Regards Philco

Philco, what are the internal measurements from one side to the other where it attaches to the chassis? My body lift kit (white tiger) has brackets that bolt to the outside of each chassis rail where the guard bolts on.
Cheers

philco

The D1 / RRC guard is 810mm internally, but there is a bit of leeway by pulling the mount arms out to slide on, if you are strong enough, it is 5mm steel.
