View Full Version : 130, how good are these things

Well, after some serious consideration of everything that is on the used car market today, it would appear that the trusty old 130 ticks most of the boxes. It is big, has a big tray, and has a big cab. All of these things seem to make it the perfect family hack. We (the wife and I) are going to be going back to one car (ie. sell the disco and Mazda 2) and need a car that can do it all. I think from all that I have read and searched the TD5 seems to be the go. So what I am asking really is, what are your opinions on these and does the missus like driving it. This will be a daily hack and as such, will be well looked after. So not massively worried about the "problems" with TD5s. I just cant bring myself to buy a 3L Pootrol, or a thirsty Cruiser. I am definitely not going to go and buy a hilux or nivara. In my opinion, these are not 4WDs (ie. independent front end). Looking forward to the responses.

Cheers Klappers :)

Yes, yes and ??

Or are you referring to a crew cab?

The single cab is a tad tight, but every thing else on mine ticks all the boxes.

Nah, referring to the DCPU :) Love the look of them and I just think that this is the best value duel cab on the market. Especially considering what you can do with a TD5 :)

Mine ticks all the boxes (I don't have an ergonomics box). They are still capable in tough offroad conditions at full load, something that can't be said for it's competitors. I've found it to be a fantastic tourer (300 Tdi).

How do you find the Tdi? Does it struggle with a full load?

Not at all, only time it struggles is taking off when towing a heavyish trailer (tandem box trailer with Suzuki LJ50 on it) up hill. That's a gearing issue though really and if necessary I just take off in low range and change to high.

Awesome. Thanks for all the info people! Love it! Keep it coming. Love the twin tent idea. The decking out of the back of that 130 is awesome.

Well, I reckon 95 300TDI 130 HCPU ticks all the right boxes.

But, my wife, and my kids refuse to drive it. It's a big step up from a car like a Mazda 2. It needs an awfull lot of reverse parking, watching out for height clearance (especially with one of those u-beaut rooftop tents!) and use of side mirrors.

If you don't mind that, then go for it!

Cheers,

Andy

Agreed on the parking, also visibility behind the tailgate. Surprisingly though I've parked mine next to GU Patrol wagons and they're about the same length if you include the spare tyre on the Nissan (and plenty of women drive them).

We have one, a 130 dual cab HCPU that is, it ticks all of our boxes, the egonomics fells bad bad when you start to drive it, but after a long trip I feel better getting out of it, than I did with the Commodore we had previously. My wife loves driving the 130, she reckons she is never getting rid of it, she uses it as her daily driver. We have a fibreglass canopy on the back of ours, shedloads of space in there.:)

Cheers, Mick.

SWMBO only drives mine very reluctantly, she really doesn't like it.
Her daily drive is a GU Patrol ute.

A Defender is much noisier than a Disco, (or a Patrol) its NVH levels are much higher and it will leak water and dust into the cab.
The turning circle of a 130 is also atrocious. This may be a large factor if you live and work in a city and is worse if you fit larger tyres (either wider or taller, unless you go to wider offset rims)
The heater and a/c aren't brilliant, although not too bad in the crew cab (less volume than a station wagon) but again a Nissan cremes a defender in these areas.
Ventilation is brilliant in a Defender, a Patrol is quite bad in this area.
The windscreen vents are fan-bloody-tastic IMO but the downside is the inevitable chilly draughts in winter.

I'd drive one first to see if you can get on with it.
Some of us will drive nothing else, I find the driving position supremely comfortable on a trip, to me it's much better than the Patrol and I climb out without the aches and pains and numbness I get when driving the Nissan (IMO Patrol seats are flat and shapeless with little support) but some just can't cope with the shortcomings of living with a Defender.
That isn't a criticism, just an acknowledgement that we are all different.

I love mine to bits! I dont think I would ever want anything different! I have found it to be great for camping and offroading, the turning circle can be a bit of a pain, as is parking at shopping centers. It is good on the fuel. I think the heater works great, but the air con!!!!!!!! I think the widows down and the window flaps open works much better! I find it to be very comfortable and easy to drive. I have noticed that going through deep water, the water comes in pretty quick, but on the upside it drains quick to even when I dont open the door to let it out
So far mine has taken anything thrown at it. My cruiser and pootrol owning mates used to hang it on me, but after awhile even they admit it a good 4x4.

As others have pointed out, If the in cab ergonomics, shear size and height don't bother you go for it. Make a great touring truck. We almost purchased the 130 twice now. The in cab ergonomics and size of the truck in a parking lot put my wife off a little as we frequently travel to Sydney.
On running gear, I recon the Td5,R380,LT230 & Sals rear end were the pick of the latter Landy's.

Mate i love mine, but the missus hates it. but when we go on trips she always comes home saying we will never ever sell it, (she won't take her nice disco where we take the 130). They certainly are the best touring truck.

Was there any more problems with the TD5's from different years.. I am starting to see a few 2000-01 models for sale. For around the 20g mark. Look like they could be the go

that means they have gone down 20k in the last three months why do you think that is Ron?
BBGELLO quoted me 53k when I looked at a new one is there any reason for the price decrease you can think of ???

What has Rick 53000 or what Ron suggested ??
It's interesting that they quoted 59k prior to finding I work for a government org, then they suggested 53k ...would be interested as to what you get for the whopping 20 grand reduction Ron quoted

Well, was speaking to the missus seriously this after noon about what we are going to do about transport, and it would appear that we have come to a compromise :) She gets to upgrade the Mazda 2 to a 3 or 6 and I get to upgrade the Disco 1 to a 130 DCPU :) Awesome. Came to the conclusion that it would be easier to still have two cars :) So all is sweet. Now I just need to win lotto and all shall be mine.

I was going to say great compromise, but there's no compromise at all, it's a win-win ;)

Lardy, I meant that 130 CC's have been $50k plus for about ten years.
That was the RRP when I bought mine just off lease eight years ago.

Yep. Pretty happy with the result there and it does make a lot of sense really. That way, the wife gets a new car and we still have a second hand one to take through the bush. Which makes a lot of sense to me :) We were thinking about getting a 40,000 Patrol or Landcruiser or whatever (I wasnt keen for obvious reasons), but realistically it makes much more sense to still have a sensible town car, and a car that we can take the future family away in :) Which I think is about as good as it gets. And as far as I am concerned, the 130 ticks all the right boxes. No shortage of space, and you can just chuck all the gear in the back with out having to worry so much. So thank to everyone who has had input and chucked in your 2 c. Muchly appreciated :)

klappers if you are after a reasonably new 2nd hand car then the Citroen C5 compares VERY well against the Mazda 6 - much more luxurious for the money. We nearly bought as Mazda - until we drove the C5.

If you weren't so far away I;d sell you ours (coming off lease)....

Interesting - I have owned Citroen D series for over forty years - and found them, particularly the later ones, very reliable. But now getting hard to find parts for!

Dont get me wrong, I never said that they weren't reliable. My old mans 504 had done over 600,000km without trouble. I just cant do it. Having said that, I would almost (not quite mind you) own a 205GTi or 405Mi16
