Because it isn't as accurate as a dial type in that situation.
Also remember to use the revised (lower) figure, not the one in the service manual.

Having said that, plenty of us use a click type and don't have a problem if you are careful ;)

There's a link to the Difflock article somewhere on here. If you don't already have it, I'd suggest following their guide as they use the revised tension figures and IIRC a click type tension wrench.

[edit] go here, there's some great links http://www.aulro.com/afvb/good-oil/41849-300tdi-timing-belt.html

Warren & Brown make them here in Australia, I have a 1/4" drive lb/in-N/mm one that I've had for years.

Precision hand tools company, Industrial tool equipment supply, Industrial engineering tool, Industrial machine tool (http://www.warrenandbrown.com.au/PrecisionTools/home.aspx)

My main 1/2" drive tension wrench is a deflecting beam style Australian made Ritch that dates from the 1950's and is as accurate as you can read the scale.

Yeah, sorry, the W&B ones don't have the pointer and scale that my old Ritch does which is a straight beam style so you can see the applied tension at any point.
