Hi all
I've just found my father's old capstan winch,
i know that it needs a lot of parts as all i have are the roller ends and the main winch with the mounting plate.
i'm not sure what brand the winch is,
some distinguishing features are:
three allen bolts on top of the capstan
10 tooth female drive on rear
starter dog on front
that's all i can really use.
Is it wise to try and source parts for it?
i.e. cost, desirability.
also what are all the parts the winch needs?
I took the bottom plate off to find the winch greased up rather than full of oil.
i assume it may have bad seals where the drive shaft goes in/out.
are these seals hard to get?
is it wise to leave grease in there?
and which oil should be used for the winch?
I'll try and get some photos up soon
Cheers
James

Hi James.
I found these two diagrams of the capstan winch in an old manual. The first is of the winch fully assembled and in situ on the bumper. The second is an exploded view with nomenclature.
Hope this helps.
AJ.
Have PM'd you.

You have an Aeroparts Capstan. There are two main types fitted to Land Rovers:
Aeroparts AEH D

As fitted to most SII/SIIa
Aeroparts AEH V (note: the round front and back on the aluminum base plate.)

As fitted to Series 1s - 107 etc
---------------------------------------------------------
The Farey capstans have the letters M A P into the top casting, and the operating lever is a piece of flat bar. (Fairey = Mayflower Auto Parts)
Talk to Bobslandies, he may know where there is an Aeroparts engine kit for a 2 1/4litre engine.

Have seen them go for over a grand, complete, on eBay and have also picked one up for $150.
The AEH V with a low number are sought after by the fanatics building 80" (but they never admit that they weren't available on the very early '48 models (in spite of the centre steer brochure))
