Worth all the effort and frustration - well done.

What are the bar treads like to drive on compared to the ones you had before?

Cheers

Hi there

A very nice little truck - you should be proud of your first outing with many more to follow.

I must admit I had 6.00 bar treads fitted to my 86 - and they do look smart.

All the best

Thanks everyone - the Colonel asked me to take him for a personal tour in her during the afternoon - and our little drive took in the Weir just up river from where we had lunch - followed by a dirt track. Hence the tyres looking as they do! They did have tyre black on them! ;)

And the brakes certainly work as Land Rover intended! Plenty of steep hills around this area. Although I have faith in them - Using the gearbox is a good idea! And my Pith helmet was onboard. ;)

I relented on Saturday afternoon and washed and polished her.

The ride quality is surprisingly good - given the look of the tyres - 6.00 X 16. Actually was pretty sweet off road too. I think it's because they have a flat strip down the middle, so they actually feel like road tyres. The Mickey Thompsons on the Puma make themselves more apparent than these.

It was just such fun to make this trip in her - without issue. Got a great many happy looks and waves - from people in general - not just Land Rover drivers.

Series 1's are just so much fun. :)

Wait until you try them on wet bitumen! That smooth strip down the centre will act like a skate.

Thanks for the warning! I'll make sure I take it easy if I'm ever out in the rain then.

When I had finished restoring my series one , I put it on club plates and on my first outing wore my bike helmet.
With no seat belts I didn't fancy going through the windscreen at 30 mph, if hit up the rear.
The whole machine was so noisy that I did a quick stop on the main entrance road opposite BBC hardware (now gone) and bought a set of earmuffs.
I did get a few strange looks when pulling up at the traffic lights and even had my picture published in the club magazine.
Such is the price of Fame.....:D

Scallops

The helmet is probably a very good idea. It does feel weird not putting on a seatbelt. I do wear a Pith helmet - but more to be an idiot that for protection. :p

We also wear custom made earplugs!

These were the only earmuffs I saw Mildred wearing.

Why waste your time restoring a noisy, slow, unreliable, 50 odd year old, piece of English history, then buy ear muffs to block out all that wonderful noise that the for sighted designers built in for us to enjoy

A truly magnificent restoration, I to still have the bar treads on mine, but when I had it on club plates and used on the roads every month, I fitted standard cross plys to the front.
It helped with the steering and gave a more positive feel to the vehicle. With bar treads it tended to wander.
When I took it off club plates and only used it on the property, I refitted the bar treads for authenticity and grip.
Again a restoration to be proud of for many years to come.........

This place is entertaining yes, but if you want information on series 1's, apart from a slim few on here, there are better places to look.

And the slim few have been there for quite a while as well.

I think what Ian was alluding too, is this used to be a section to get info on resto's, but nowadays the General Chat aspect has taken over the whole forum. It's just evolved to be more social and less technical.

Great if you want to spend all day talking about your vehicle, not so if you want information.

I agree Tony, most S1's are restored or it is now to expensive, not worth the financial effort, parts are defiantly harder to procure and the list goes on and on.
If restoring a RR or Packard the end reward in $ would make it worthwhile.
To contemplate a full restoration of a series one landie is probably indicating a crossed circuit in the temporal regions?
But who cares? we do what we do and have lots of fun doing it....:D
Next week my landie is going into the shed for a full makeover after restoration completed in 1992.
The tilt is coming of first for minor repairs due to age and a total respray will be in hand soon after.
All the mechanicals were done properly the first time so i only have to rectify the jumping out of 2nd gear.
New brake rubbers and that's about it.
It might be finished by march 2011, I dont like to rush things but do them at my own pace.
I will then put it on ebay and sell the two, parts 1950 and Mildred 1952 for at least $20 more that it originally cost to buy?
Such is life:beer:

Understood :) But if this place is just going to be a technical place - well, you've pretty much all heard the last from me. Maybe that's what's being alluded to too - I don't know. But I think, sharing the joy of these vehicles, by posting pictures - and speaking simply of the pleasure they have brought to me personally - even as a "one liner", is also a valuable contribution. Maybe ol' mate should have considered that aspect too.

Does that Trans Tasman forum still work - there seems to be one recent post but some sections go back years with out anything being added.

It looks as if it had died.
