My Warn winch motor needs replacing

Hi All

When I first purchase my car back last year, it came with a Warn 9,000pd winch in a milk crate. The winch had a broken housing where the tie rods connect, so I ordered replacement parts from M&M imports at Slacks Creek here in Brisbane.

The winch never worked and upon closer inspection, the motor is full of rust and my guess is that it is seized.

What are my options to replace the motor? I see on ebay that there are cheap (compared to genuine warn) motors of greater horsepower for around $380.

I haven't used one of those particular motors so cant comment on quality. I did notice that it is a very high hp motor for a winch.
When I upgraded from my warn 4.6 hp motor to a larger capacity motor I no longer had the battery capacity to feed the winch and needed to upgrade my battery supply. IMO unless you are really serious then that size motor will cause you as many problems as it solves.

Are you 100% sure the motor is stuffed?

Why dont you pull it apart and clean it up with a bit of degreaser? Id suggest the motor brushes are stuck, and not giving power to the rotor.
Pull it all apart, give it a once over making sure all the parts move that should...then put it back together...you might be surprised it still works.
You might also need to replace the bearings, but you should be able to tell when you pull it apart.

Replacing the brushes and bearings are going to be heaps cheaper than a new motor.

These types of motor are pretty robust. Unless the smoke has got out, and the insulation burnt off, you've got a real good chance that a stern dose of looking at and a bit of bad language will get it going again. (and maybe new bearings).

Hi guys, I guess I can throw a winch question in here. Supercheap have today just listed a Rydge Ryder 9000lb, 5.5HP, 12V (series wound motor-whatever that is compared to a normal electric motor?), remote switch with a 3.5m lead, 195.8:1 gear reduction ratio, auto in the drum brake. Normally $699, best previous price I've seen for it is $499, now on sale for $397. Sale ends 4/9/10 and no I don't work for them.
Any thoughts on this one? Good or bad comments appreciated. Cheapest new winch I've seen, although the 12,000lb Tigerz looks attractive it also costs around $800+ on ebay so I thought for less than 1/2 the price the RRyder looked ok. Also maybe easier alternative to all the work fixing up the Warn. I try to balance how much I could earn (if I can get the overtime) to pay for new parts or pay someone else to fix a problem compared to how long it will take me and how much I'll save. Although, I then do the overtime and try to fix it myself anyway - hah! Thanks in advance :)

You'll probably find that a bigger than the 4.6hp motor wont fit on the winch and between the chassis rails.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll get more time this weekend to have a closer look at the motor and try to pull the rotor out and check the brushes/bearings.

I might need to buy a new solenoid pack as well....

and yes slunnie...currently the Warn XD9000 takes up all the room between the chassis rails. I notice that the repalcement larger HP motors also come with an alloy cooling end which would not fit between the chassis rails of the defender.

Speaking of larger capacity winch motors and battery drain, the TMAX 9000 with a 6hp motor recommends a CCA of 650 for a battery.

Anyway...I will get some pictures up this weekend of the damage...
