View Full Version : New Arrival with some Confusion

Hi All
After several weeks patiently waiting IT has arrived....'51 / '52 80 inch in need of some TLC.

No Brakes, no Air filter, no gauges, split fuel tank, etc etc - list is getting longer by the day ! But more importantly no rust in the chassis or bulkhead as far as I can tell.

There is a small split in the chassis but should be an easy fix.

No doubt I will be a regular visitor to this forum and update with photos as much as I can. But to start with I was looking for some clarification;
Chassis No. 16660960
Eng. No. E36110335

Some brief searching on the net leads me to believe that the Eng. No. is from a 2.25L ?

Its going to be a daily driver and hopefully (if I can maintain his interest !) pass it on to my 14 year old...

I am going to strip completely and blast/paint the chassis before starting on a rebuild project with him....any advice on galvanising the chassis and for that matter any other aspect of the project greatly appreciated

Cheers

My advice is NOT to do too much: sure, do the chassis and the suspension bits and service the drivetrain and steering, get the motor running, but apart from that, I'd preserve some of the "patina" (in Afrikaans, "die houding") because that's what really makes it special IMHO.

My wife would probably kill for one that cute, and it looks very complete. Just the wipers and some wiring before rego?;)

Well, it certainly is not a 2.25 engine - I presume that you mean a 2.0l engine. According to Calvin it is a 51 model, and this should probably have the siamese bore 2.0l engine, but it is likely to have been replaced at some time by a spread bore engine.

It's most likley it's a siamese bore engine with the ZS 1 bypass oil filter
Also note the engine mount bolt lock / keeper you dont see very many
of those still in place. Looks in reasonable condition too.........

Well it all sounds like you guys know far more than I !

I forgot to mention the spare diff (not sure Front or rear yet) and the PTO that the guy had.....There's also a second Solex Carby which I will hang on to until I get it up and running

Welcome to the forum Freosmiths. :) You will no doubt find - as indeed you already are, that there are plenty of not only helpful, but very knowledgeable persons here only too willing to offer help, advice and encouragement.

You 80 inch looks grand, they are such sweet little trucks - I look forward to sharing in your journey together. :)

Guys - One thing though - I thought the '51 80 inch had a 1.6 motor from factory - it does look just like my motor (2l spread bore), but.

Dan.

Amazing what you learn in such a short time....Chassis number was completely wrong !

Chassis No.is ACTUALLY 36661625 (so '53 it seems)
Eng. No. 36110335

Seems a little more acceptable and in any case not too fussed about that as its still a little beauty ! and that would explain the inverted T grill and external door handles...

So probably leaning towards the 2L now

Oldies are down that way (Bunbury) and driving over here shortly...there are a few things that I am chasing though, maybe I could PM you and see what they might be able to bring with them ? ;)

Heya Freosmiths

Here is some info I dug up for you from the Series 1 club in England.... yours in bold italics

1953 models
As 1951 sequence with change of first digit for new model year

Basic model:
Home models 36100001 to 36104122
RHD export 36160001 to 36164007
LHD export 36130001 to 36134613

RHD export, (C.K.D) 36660001 to 36662240
LHD export, (C.K.D) 36630001 to 36637268 incl. Minerva - but without bodywork.

Mobile Welder:
Home models 36300001 to 36300008
RHD export 36360001 to 36360007
LHD export 36330001 to 36330007

The engine, gearbox and front axlenumbers for these models are 36100001 onwards for RHD vehicles and 36130001 onwards for LHD vehicles.
The rear axles are all numbered 36100001 onwards

So a 1953 model - complete knock down kit - RHD export - which is how they came here to Australia - would have been assembled in Sydney, I believe.

The engine, gearbox and front axlenumbers for these models are
36100001 onwards for Right hand drive vehicles and
36130001 onwards for Left hand drive vehicles.
The rear axles are all numbered 36100001 onwards Total 1953 model production, 22272 vehicles. (Includes Minervas)

Total 80" Land Rover production, 82395 vehicles.

So you have an original 80 inch, 2 litre engine! :clap2: Enjoy.

Hi Tony...late September ?
Unfortunately already booked a couple of weeks hols in Tassie with the family so i am gonna miss-out....

would have been a perfect opportunity to chase up bits and speak with people...bugger !

Taking the defender though so still gonna get my landie fix !!:)

Hi Tony
main ones for me right now would be gauges, fuel tank (unsure if it is salvageable - need to get to a fabricator to check that), air cleaner assembly, seats !!, ignition switch....

perhaps I can supplement your own restoration hobby !!

no doubt there is more to add to that

cheers

that is a beauty!

the 80" just have that great look, and I actually agree with the idea
of "leave it as it looks" but if you like it painted so be it! Thats cool too!

whilst everyone is offering bits...

I'll throw in my list...

1) all the bits needed to build an 80"

2) all the bits for a gunbuggy...

3) ambrose/matilda...etc etc:eek:

I'm not asking too much am I???

besides the obvious ones once you get into it let me know what things you will need or your unsure about if you need any help with diffs im pretty good now i have done a few of them.

Freosmiths
17th August 2010, 08:28 PM
Chgeers Tony thanks for that....did a little more today - radiator needs a good going over, bulkhead off (again no rust that I can see - think it has spent plenty of time way out west)

To be honest I have no idea if I am going to go that far with dismantling the diffs ? Although I do have that spare I could work on later...

I definitely want to tidy up the chassis = repaint or galvanise and repair some minor dings in it. And of course the rest of the bodywork to some extent

was going to take the rolling chassis to some form of jetwash place, degrease and blast the eng/gbox and then bring home for final dismantling of motor etc from chassis before getting that sorted.

All brake lines are disconnected and looks like at some point someone had put the axles under the springs to get some more height I guess ! I might even set it all up again without doing any major work on motor/gbox as it was running and driving beforehand....steering needs some attention
