It's quite amusing these day seeing all the the rear DVD players flashing away, kids like little zombies in the back.
I suppose the parents realise that all the cars following can see it all too ?

In the burbs our kids dont get to play their DS or watch the big screen. A trip that is longer than about 2 hours will get the DS's buzzing. A trip that is longer than a 1/2 day is likely to get the dvd screens on.
It all depends on what is available for the kids to do rather than plug in technology. Sometimes hours and hours of nothing but the same stretch or road/track gets boring.... for everyone.
If the scenery is constantly changing then there is something to look at and get excited about.

Got a better way to keep kids happy on a 5 hour road trip......
works really well for us

When our kids were young they had their Walkman's for a long trip.
This is just a progression from that, I guess.
But it wasn't being flashed to everyone around.

If the truck drivers dont want to watch Shrek then they should keep their eyes on the road.
