Honesty in ads - especially Ebay

I try to keep a bit of an eye on the bits and peices coming up for sale.

Often there is an incorrectly labled vehicle or part by those who are not aware of what they have (eg: Land Rover - Series 1 - eBay, Other, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 27-Aug-10 20:11:40 AEST) (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140441678868&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:AU:1123) )

But concerning me is there is a number of people advertising (commony on Ebay) and either lying or misrepresenting their products as genuine or as fitting other models they clearly don't fit.

(eg: Land Rover Series 1/2/2a/3/County Defender Lenses NEW - eBay Other, Lights, Indicators, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 26-Aug-10 19:21:46 AEST) (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/e11051.m43.l1123/7?euid=6f19d7cc2f6f431d861949dbc3bb1d95&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com.au%2Fws%2FeBayISAPI. dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D200508865963%26ssPageName% 3DADME%3AX%3ARTQ%3AAU%3A1123) --- this is not by far the only one but just an example= appears a good part but wrongly represented:mad:)

so in the case of this last one...
I questioned the ad.

Dear landroverXXXXXX, (name not needed for example so XX represents changed characters)

"which series 1-2a landrovers do these fit? If standard fittings I believe series 1 at least are a completely different light & base?

just checking thanks"

answer received was:

"Hi,

Yes to be technically correct the lenses are for Series 2a onwards, but there are many vehicles out there with the latter ones fitted. The standard bases from Series 2 onwards will accept these lenses although the Series 2 had a more shallow lense.

these in no way fit a series 1 nor the majority of series 1's. In the same way as a cortina taillight lens doesnt, nor a holden commodore blinker lens.

The incusion of series 2 and 2a is misleading I believe because it
represents that they are correct lenses for these models.

making this case worse is the fact the seller name includes "landrover"
and so further implies he/she knows what they are doing!


Im finding it very annoying and even frustrating that these continue.

I've received presents from friends who ordered parts for me according to
the models etc stated in ads and now I have things like a gear knob that are allegedly for a series 1 (and show 5 gears + reverse!)

It erodes my faith in these sellers someof whom Ive already dealt with (without any apparent problems) myself.

my 2c.- I assume others have noticed these problems?

Then report the offender to ebay - they do usually quickly remove adds that misrepresent products.

Your gear knob is likely from a 'series 1' disco, the use of 'series' in the description of a disco irritates me, I always thought they were simply Discovery 1, Discovery 2, D3, D4.
Makes for a lot of inappropriate stuff to wade through when doing a search for 'Land Rover Series' or similar.

Have to agree with your sentiments, however the Discovery models were actually Discovery

Discovery 4The first models of Disco only became Series 1 when Land Rover fitted (Series II) badges to the models with the longer load area and high tail/stop lamps.

It must be a nightmare sorting out what to call various models. The Range Rovers were Range Rover - which became 2 door Range Rover and 4 door Range Rover when they made factory 4 doors in 1982, then in 1985 they changed the dash, electrical system, wheel hubs and removed the quarter window and those models officially became "Phase II", while various parts were changed the only official collection after that was when the name "Classic" was used for the traditional shape in the single year when they were simultaneously building the P38a. Now all the traditional shape RR are called classic (and why I use the abbreviation "RRc" for most traditional shaped Range Rovers and "RRC" for the soft dash ones badged Classic - pedantic aren't I?)

What would you call the various era vehicles?

What really irks me is when the vendor lists every make of vehicle in the description in white font on a white background.

This is why you search side lamp for Land Rover Series 2 and you get Xenon bulbs for Mazda, Nissan and every other make coming up in your results. :nazilock:

I am very careful when advertising on ebay - I must be too honest no-one ever buys my stuff. Speaking of which i have for sale...

there are so many misreadings as im on there everyday and see every land rover ad i agree with mark i hate people saying series 1 when it is a disco
