Hi technical boffins, got a question for you. I just bought a winch from supercheap. I checked first to see if I could get my money back though!. Cost $397 on special, it's a 9500lb, 12V 5.5hp series wound motor (whatever that is), in drum brake, 28m steel cable, 195.8:1 gear reduction ratio, weighs about 35kg. I know you get what ya pay for and they only fail when you really need them but I've got a Tirfor as backup and the Tigerz11 costs $800+ and Warns are even more so I figured it's a reasonably good deal. Any thoughts/ comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance
cheers gerald

Pirasea, i was looking at that in the junk mail and wondering the same?
Any people more knowledgeable about who built it ,quality ,and their reputations?

I don't trust anything from Supercheap except their dwindling stocks of name brand products. Has anyone else noticed they no longer seem to sell cheap crap, it's all expensive crap. :(

14ltr waeco fridge for $159 is pretty good isnt it
funny how the winch is secondary to the straps, but it says reduced by $302

Yeah Ausfree, I do that wih Hardly Normal but I haven't seen a winch cheaper than this anywhere else. They're made in ... you guessed it - CHINA by Wun Hung Lo for a bowl of rice. I was just reading here the other day about someone who had a Warn that rusted up inside so my logic is you're gonna need a bit of TLC and PM with all of them, especially if they go swimming occasionally but hey, I'm willing to take it back if everyone bags them. The Tigerz11 also had a bit of rubbishing when they first appeared, now they're getting better reviews.
Frantic, I guess we'l both keep an eye on the responses, eh??
Ramblingboy42 previous price on the same winch was $699, but was introduced at $499. Maybe they didn't sell any or many?

The martket is flooded with these cheap Chinese winches. Aldi just sold a heap @ $399. I bought one & stripped it down & it looks quite good quality, I put quality grease in it.
It seems 50-50 on opinions on these, but I've read enough threads to form the opinion they aren't crap.

My neighbour has purchased one of these POS super crap winches. Pulled it all apart, lubed it properly etc. Seems to work OK. For how long who knows? From what i have seen so far, it's surprisingly well made for the price.

Thanks Rangier Rover & Deejay. I was hoping someone had something positive to say. Considering how often you normally use a winch (cos you really don't want to have to) spending thousands is hard to justify. I'll pull it apart and grease it up as you suggested.

i also bought an aldi winch a few months back, the first thing i did, was pull it down and regrease everything, i also rotated the 'gearbox' for lack of a better term, to make the positioning of the freespool lever more convenient
i have used it many times, id guess 10-15 times, pulling trees off tracks, self-recovery, it has not given me one bit of trouble
one thing i would change about it, and will eventually, is to get plasma rope, or a thicker wire rope for it, the supplied wire rope seems a bit 'light weight' but still does its job fine

As a matter of interest...what type of grease should you use when re-packing/ servicing elect winches?
I have had a Tirfor.. and used it... for many years..but old age is making an electric one look attractive.
Only need one for emergency recovery/tree moving ...and with the type of driving I do now..probably rarely to be used...So I was considering a "cheapy"
Any info appreciated
Cheers

good question discodancer, it made me look at a tub of Castrol boating grease I have. Used for the boat trailer hubs. It is lithium based, water resistant, contains a powerful corrosion inhibitor, blah, blah, blah ....... oh and, not recommended for continuous underwater operations. But still pretty good from what I've noticed.
ps exactly which parts do you grease?

I have had a Chinese winch for about 5 years now. Have used it a fair bit and in some tough winching. The winch sounds growly but has been fine. The solenoids gave some grief,so brought the type used by Tigerz winches. Was brought from the bloke who sells the winches. Since then no problems. As the case for most low mount winches, it is not real fast when winching. My son has a high mount Warne winch and it is nearly twice as quick when winching. But I`m not competing so a bit slower and getting out of trouble is fine with me.
