Hi, just back from trip, along Gibb River Rd, up into Mitchel Plateau, across Duncan Rd, Buntine Hwy to Top Springs, thru Gregory NP Bulita stock route, Buchanan Hwy to Dunmarra, and home to Sunny Coast, 11000 km in total, 3500km, on dirt, corro, rock and sand, D4 WAS FAULTLESS, it just loved it. I know some have troubles, but the D4 just ate it up with class and style.:D(towed a 2ton Kimberley Karavan the whole way)
Only let in dust at tailgate, water drains sucked dust up and out off small holes in seal, bit of tape problem solved.
Pirelli scorpion tyres 19" afew marks on tyres and rims but not even a flat
(carried all those tyres for nothing);)
BUT 3 major cracks in the windscreen, just got a quote $1172, and haven't got one. Question is does anyone know if D3 is the same as D4
Cheers Ken

Insurance should cover the window? most policies have this now.

As long as you "specified" glass coverage....otherwise you cop the bill. Some companies don't even offer glass coverage any more....check the fine print.
cheers.

The really good news is all those kays and no tire probs!!! Maybe the scaremongering is just that?

Roamer did you put the Scorpions on from new? My dealer refuses to swap them before I take delivery - is that normal?

Hi Ken,
Your post gives me more confidence for the 3 week trip we are about to do in our D4. Tyres remain my biggest concern. Which scorpion tyres did you go for (ATR?). I'm trying to get a hold of these but near impossible :(

Hi Roamer,

Just completed a similar trip, didn't tow anything but completed 8250km without any problems whatsoever. I had ordered 6 Pirelli 19'atr's but after waiting 3 months they only gave me 4 so I told them to stick them! Bought 6 Goodyear Wrangler MTR's, brilliant although they were very noisy. Took them off as soon as I arrived home in Perth but I will put them back on before my next trek. I think the the people who criticise 19' tyres are simply basing their criticism on what they think and not what they have done. The Disco 4 and 19'' wheels performed very well and over some of the worst roads that I have ever driven on.
Cheers

I am getting a 2.7 D4 next month, on 18in wheels. Any idea where I could get some 18in or even better 17in rims for placing "going bush" tyres on? I was going to get one additional genuine rim from LR, but it is nearly $900. I wonder why genuine components are so expensive?

I can get Cooper ATRs for the 18's, but I have been led to believe the selection is even better for 17's. Brian

they fit BUT the way the mirror and the sensors and since you have HB assist you need a D4 screen,

so in short, NO they do not,

your trip sounds great,

Hi Roamer,

What a wonderful sounding trip:D:D

I have the Gregory NP on my radar, what did you think of the challenge and what was your impression of the country?

Did you pull the KK through there?

Hi CNSPERIO, I have a D3 at the moment but am anxiously awaiting the arrival of a D4 3.0 litre with the 19" wheels.

HI RichardK,
We did the Bullitta stock route, and some of the Humbert track.
The Bullita route has a rather challenging jump up just after you get started(its a one way track) slow going till ya get to "stock yard camp" (angry freshie in that billabong who holds his ground), then fairly serious drop down into the East Bain river, and quiet bouldery as you go along it for abit, other wise quite staight forward. The country is in fanastic condition, it has had a fair bit of rain (Limestone gorge road washed away hence closed)plenty of fish
even I caught some :D
We did pull the KK thru, even though trailers not recommended ,but hey its a Land Rover & KK, they loved it, just keep it slow, and trust your LR, you will not be disappointed.
So I suggest you get out from behind the keyboard and get behind the steeringwheel asap (LOL)
Cheers Ken
PS. LRAust came up with the windscreen in a week, :D

True, when we were there Limestme Gorge rd washed away, but you could walk into (3km) camp area then into gorge, they had a fairly decent road block, didnt seem like they were going to repair rd in the near future, anyway whats an extra 3km walk each way, keeps crowd to a minimum. ;);)

Roamer, where did you get to with the screen? Just been quoted for OEM with sensor at $1150. Different screen to the D3 apparently, no after market yet.

Also do you reckon the D4 screen is weak. I picked up a 10c bullsye, put a sticker on ot when I got home and by morning it was cracked 20cm in 3 directions.

I have had at least half a dozen similar on my Patrol which have not spread and have been repaired.

Hi OBT, went through insurance, Windscreens O'briens did it, they said OEM because car too new for them to have a template yet, LRA said 4 weeks but turned up in a week. all fixed , all good, they even knew to get new A pillar clips. :) [I] don't know if the screens are weak or not, but the cracks certainly did grow quick.

Just did 1600kms in the D4 and went flawlessly and the easiest long distance I have ever done. Awesome!

On the topic of the thread, copped a stone from a passing semi, and got a big star and crack spread quite quickly. I have just called Windscreens O'Brien and got a quote for $1298... will keep you in the loop for any updates and get some quotes from the dealer on Monday.

Anything else to look for aside from new A-Pillar clips and to ensure the rain sensor is crystal clear? This will be an insurance job, so I will be ensuring it is original LR Pilkington glass.

OBriens had the LR ones in stock when mine was replaced a couple of weeks ago.

If you have a rain sensor get it changed at the same time.

Just make sure you go OE and not after market. You should always choose the glass option on vehicle insurance (but your insurer may only be willing to pay for after market) You then have to hassle with them about the cost.

Here's a quick update:

Good News:

AAMI Windscreen Protection does not exclude the D4
AAMI Windscreen Protection includes the rain sensor
There are no aftermarket windscreens available for D4, so all suppliers get the original from the LR Spare Parts dept
There seems to be stock around - I called last night to arrange an appointment, and this morning by 8:00am they already had arranged the windscreen to be delivered before noon (the installer is down the road from the LR Dealer)

Bad News:

I didn't take out windscreen protection before the incident [bawl]
So I need to pay the standard Excess

Good News

The excess can be paid for from my lease - so at least it's not the full amount
I can start the windscreen insurance after this incident

Lessons Learnt:
I will be taking out the windscreen protection insurance. At $50/year, if I score 1 windscreen in 10 years I am still ahead.

The one that automatically switches on the windscreen wipers when you have auto selected when it rains or a bugs smashes on the screen in front of it - is mounted up in front of the rear vision mirror - it detects the change in the light path caused buy a drop of water on the screen in front of it - or as I said a splatted bug.

When I had my screen replaced Swan Insurance has windsreen free to a limit of (I think it was) $500,left me to pay about $700, so obviously put in claim and paid excess $350.
Just check if there is a limit, before you part with the $50.

With Suncorp I/we get 1 free piece of glass per year.
So in the 18 months we have owned the D3 we have had 1 new windscreen & 1 new rear screen.
Here's hoping we don't smash/crack anything else till September.

Agreed - I noticed that there was a disclaimer that "some exclusions might apply", so I specifically asked AAMI about it and it seems that they are OK for the full price including the sensor (if required).

Had a new windscreen fitted to my D4 HSE today by the dealer. Was charged $918 for the glass and $197 for fitting, which I think was done by local Instant Windscreens shop.

Corporate insurance policy covers the full cost.

Also had a new EAS compressor fitted as warning lights had started to flash but had not experienced any issues as previously reported on other threads.

Cheers
