Knowing little about RR and looking to buy one soon I wonder if someone could enlighten me with RR models that have been released with diesel motors. Also the most economical and most reliable model. Thanks, Jim

In Australia you could get a Classic RR fitted with a VM diesel (run away! Search for some threads regarding it).

After that we were RR diesel free for quite some time. The P38 was available in Europe with a BMW 2.5 litre inline 6 diesel, but it was not sold here (there might be one or two around).

It was the third body shape RR (L322) that changed the diesel scene. Once again a BMW engine was fitted, but of 3 litres capacity. It is an excellent engine that returns very good economy.

More recently there has been a 3.6 litre V8 diesel fitted to the same shape Range Rover. The current one is 4.4 litres.

The RR Sport was also fitted with a diesel engine. TDV6 of 2.7 litres and TDV8 of 3.6 litres. Now 4.4 litres.

As far as reliability, it is hard to say. Given that the above models are available secondhand and new, with prices varying between "give away" to well over $150 000, it is a bit hard to make recommendations without knowing your budget!

The older L322 Rangies (2003/2004) are becoming very reasonable to buy. There was another post here tonight from somone who found one for mid $30s.

I've got one with the 6 cylinder BMW sourced engine and it is brilliant. 10L/100 no problems. Quick too.

As Jon says though - how much money are you looking to part with?

And also perhaps consider if you have allowed for enough money to be put aside for the [sometimes heavy] maintenance of a RR?

Being that it was an Italian engine there is a joke somewhere there about wars and running away

But they were a marine engine and still useful in the marine industry

Some years ago I put a VM in my '85 County to replace the V8, Its now done just under 300k, I get about 8klm/lt (thats pulling a 2.9 tonne County) I had used VM's in my sawmill in PNG for 20 years 10hrs a day 5 1/2 days a week, screaming! with no problems at all. So I have nothing to say against them, the high cost of spares is no where near the cost of fuel and rego I had to put into the V8.
Speed Kills, Drive a LandRover and live longer.

Since we're in the Classic part of the forum 1970-1995, I would say that in terms of reliability, a 91-92 model would be the most reliable and fuel efficient. The 3.9 lt is actually quite quick, and if serviced well you'll get about 13lt/100km on the hwy, and about 18-20 around town - not to bad when you consider many newer Japanese diesels use more! But push it hard and it'll really drink!!

The 93-94 LSE would be the pick of the bunch in terms of being a real drivers car, but you've got the eas which can be troublesome.

Nothing on these cars are exptionally expensive to repair if you do it yourself.

You'd be very hard pushed to find a pre2004 (L322)diesel. I've only ever seen three. Most people put them on LPG if they want to run cheaper.
