Had a bit of a search before I posted - but there are a bizillion results for all the combinations I tried.

I need to clean/repaint the front end of my chassis and the firewall while the engine is out.
Firstly, any recommendations for a garage-friendly degreasing/cleaning solution. Dont mind having to brush/spray down with hot water etc to get the degreaser off but cant just hose it off.

Also after a paint recommendation. Dont mind a brushed finish but would like something thats not porous and keeps the rust away.

Hi Steve,

I'm in the same situation. There's a lot of advice but I reckon the main thing is to get it all really clean, stabilize any surface rust and then coat it. I'll probably use Penetrol as a base coat and then Killrust. No doubt it will be covered in a protective layer of oil soon enough too.

I'd be happy to hear any better ideas though - it's a bit hard to change your mind once the engine's back in. :o

I've been reading up on these paints and products KBS Coatings - Stop Rust Paint- Tank Sealer - for rusty surfaces (http://www.kbs-coatings.com.au/) after using their RustBlast product.

I agree POR15 Chassis Black is the go to use, while a container of it may seem expensive I was suprised how far it went. Also it is self levelling so those brush strokes disappear and you are left with a great smooth finish. The only thing I would say is have extra bits to paint as it goes off once opened not straight away but surprising fast, more so than other paints. Also wear gloves its a bugger to get off you hands will stay stuck for WEEKS.

Thanks Garry - good to know that it goes off quickly.
Is that whats on the vac pump I got from you? If it is then it definitely has a good finish.
What size tin do you think I'd need to cover the chassis rails and front of the firewall but not have much left over?
