View Full Version : Boost Gauge Question

I have just installed a boost guage, it did have a leak at first which I hope I have fixed, this leads me to my question, do boost guages chatter, I have noticed that when it gets to a point of not quite max boost, it will chatter (really fast clicking noise) and the needle flickers back and forth, is this normal or is it still leaking:confused:

Mine definately doesn't. Smooth all the way to 17psi ;). VDO Vision Series on a 300 Tdi.

VDO boost guages come with a restrictor for the line which is supposed to stop the fluctations

I recall reading in another thread a suggestion to use a cigarette filter in the line to dampen the fluctuations.

Mine is a Prycol, i'm pretty sure there are no more leaks:angel:

Not quite full boost will be starting to run the wastegate.

Your guage is reading the fluttering wastegate. Put a restrictor in as mentioned.

Mines plumbed in to the replacement intake piece once I removed the EGR butterfly. I had a boss welded onto the intake, drilled it out and then put a 1/8BPT thread in it, which fited my VDO sender. Later, I actually put a brass t-piece into this hole, and now I have both the VDO sender, and the pick up for my vnt turbo actuator coming from the same point.

My Prosport gauge came with an inline sponge filter.
Works well to dampen any shock and can still see the wastegate action when it hits its initial peak. Mine is a stepper motor type so probably not as sensitive as a mechanical.

Restrictor works, but slows gauge action also.

I have a Autometer pro comp boost gauge plumbed into the EGR replacement. No damper in line and at full boost 17psi, the needle flickers, as Tombie said, the wastegate is actuating, the gauge is smooth otherwise.
