View Full Version : Diff Whine in D3

My Dec '05 D3 developed a whine at about 82,000kms. I've had it checked by two Landrover dealers. One said it was the front diff the other claimed it was the rear diff. Both said it is not an issue to worry about. Eventually, when the whine gets louder, it will be the noise rather than any mechanical reason to get the diff replaced. The diffs are ordered as required from the UK as a change over unit at around $1,200.:(

I haven't noticed any posts regarding diff whine so I guess its not a common issue. Does anyone have any advice (friendly) for me?

Regards, Peter

Front or rear ? What !! ....... Changeover done by whom ? The "noise" IS the sound of failure Pete . Get it sorted
if you intend to keep it . It will get worse and you don't want a failure . I'm in my 8th week waiting for a front
diff on LR warranty ..........
Check the transfer case oil too ..........

I have the same issue - noticed a slight whine from my '05 D3 and put it in for a service yesterday. Was told today that I need:

1. A new rear diff (the whine)
2. New brakes all around
3. A new compressor (had been getting intermittent suspension fault warnings but had no issues re sagging or slow to raise - Bruce Lynton have assured me it's not the sensors)
4. New ball joints

$6,000 all up. Question is do I get all this done and hopefully all issues are solved (love the car....or did anyway!) or do I cut my losses and trade it in on a new car as is?

Are their any independent mechanics on the Gold Coast who can look at D3's?

Cheers,
Brett

Hi,
Might not be relevant, but I had my (09 model) rear diff replaced under warranty @ around 6 months old. The dealer picked it up before I noticed anything & said that there had been a bad batch of diffs for the D3's. It took around 6 weeks to get one in.

I assume you've changed-out your brake bulbs ?
I'd not be too hasty to buy a new compressor if you've still
got air pressure........ I bet they won't give you a total refund
if it doesn't solve the problem .

They bring them in via Catapillar. Known issue of front diff failure on early models.

... They bring them in via Caterpillar....
At 31 kph for a trackloader , that explains the delay in driving 'em here ;)
Should get Tim Cope and his horse to bring me a diff from Hungary !

Haven't checked the brake bulbs - will do. Definitely not rushing into the compressor!

The front diffs are non for the paint inside flaking off and stuffing up the bearrings..

The compressor there is a new fix for them b4 replacing the pump.. there is a valve block kit for the pump that costs about 400 if i remeber.. there is a full bulletin out on it..

The front diffs are known for the paint inside flaking off and stuffing up the bearings...
That's been disproved since the replacements without coatings also fail ...

Check that the whine is not the wheel bearings. I had my rear diff done
on my 06 TDV6 when i picked it up noise still there it was the rear left
wheel bearing.

yup - I am going to get a second opinion on both the compressor and diff. Has anyone used Rick's 4WD Centre @ Nerang and if so would you recommend them?

Thanks again,
Brett

Thanks Bigmac. I'll get them to check the wheel bearings. GP.

Hey guys, I've just bought a D3 with 95k on it and was told by the previous owner that the front diff was replaced at 80k and the compressor at 65k. I've just got it back from the 100k service was told that i need front CV's {entire shaft required} and front wheel bearing pack and bushes? So i can only assume these are common for D3's???

If you bought this out-of-warranty , the seller probably
saw it coming ....... welcome to expense , and yes , it's not
that uncommon .:(

Wheel bearings are a common failure but haven't heard of CVs going.

Hey all just a quick P.S. Had all the afore mentioned repairs completed and yes the mechanic agrees not hugely common for CV's but wheel bearings definately. However given that i've now seen what's involved in replacing the wheel bearing pack next, time i'll be doing the job myself and i would suggest anyone with a little mechanical nous have a go too as it's really not that complicated.
happy trails all.
P.S. kept the old CV shaft and will be pulling it apart to see how it works , ayone interested in photo'slet me know.
Cheers
