View Full Version : Axle Identification Would be Helpful

Hi All
I am trying to identify the rear axles that I have;

1. Marking 5 55 (as far as I can tell) currently fitted to vehicle '53 80 inch

2. No ID as far as I can tell

I am assuming for the time being that the 5 55 version is from something else and will need to replace it with the as yet unidentified version but it is something that would be really helpful to confirm

Chassis No. 36662165
Eng. No. 36110335
GBox No. 36110339
PTO output 870765

As always any assistance greatly appreciated as I am just coming to grips with all of the various items as it is slowly being dismantled

Cheers Kevin

The only differences of importance between an 80" rear axle and a 1955 axle (housing) is the mounting plate for the springs.

The 80" had 1 3/4" wide springs and a similar sized plate and the 1955 had 2 1/2" spring and plate.

The the diffs on the 1953 again should essentially be the same as later diffs, the only real differences were with the 1948 4.88:1 ratio and the long nose 4.7:1 ratio which finished in early 1950.

The halfshafts (apart from very early 1948) are the same for all the semi-floating.

The brake pipes on post 80" are 3/16" rather than 1/4" of the 80"

Thanks Diana that should clear up at least that part of the re-build

The enquiry was also the result of a comment made by the previous owner about the diffs and whether or not the "correct" one was in the vehicle.....

cheers
