Hi all,

After 4 months of travelling around crazy for work I have finally returned and have time to chase up my first Defender.

Decided to buy a second hand one first and get to know the beast a little before shelling out the dollars for a new one.

Given how strapped I am for time, I could really use some advice. I've crammed in some reading and forum searching as I can, but would appreciate advice as follows:

1. What would you expect the following rig to be worth?

2002 Defender TD5 110 Wagon

140,000 kms
1 owner - full service history, log books
1 or 2 minor panelwork dents - nothing to write home about
No rust chassis, pillars, doorframes, bulkhead etc
No door looseness/movement
No underbody damage/bashes
Engine hasn't been modified - no chip/upgrade or intercooler
Engine starts up immediately
No weird engines noises or drive-train grinding/clunking
Gear-box is smooth and moves freely
White in colour, no paint damage, blistering, bubbles or scratches
Interior is immaculate, no sagging in lining, back seat hardly used, no evidence of water leaks (I know, I know - but I searched!)
Windows tinted

Owner claims to have kept it garaged and as far as 4wd goes, to have only done 2 major 4wd trips with his family. Judging from the state of the rig I tend to believe him. They're only selling because they bought a new Puma.

Comes fitted with:

Warne 9000 winch and gear
ARB Bullbar
Spotlights
ARB Roofrack/cage (full)
UHF radio
Compressor
Sliding-drawer in back (single with divider)
Side steps (not sliders)
Safari Snorkel
Battery/Fridge setup (but no fridge)
CD/DVD (whatever)
2.5 exhaust

Only negatives I can find are the passenger seat recline adjusting lever is broken, the spare tyre has picked up a tear, passenger side mirror feels a little loose.

Fitted with alloys and Road tyres - no steelies or muddies.

No long-range tanks.

2. What should be first on my list of modifications?

More worried about engine protection and performance at this stage. Will use it as a work rig whilst I get to know her, mostly road and dirt/graded access. Serious 4wd protection such as diff/steering rod guards etc will come later once (if) work ever allows me to breathe enough to get away.

Long-range fuel tank is a definite for me. Not sure about replacing with bigger, adding back guard tank or going with sill tanks.

I've read a lot about engine protection and monitoring for heat.

Chipping/Intercooling? Pros/cons?

Anything in particular I should assume the motor would need at 150K?

I know I have more hours and hours of reading and forum searching ahead of me - but any head-start you could give me would be seriously appreciated.

Cheers,

Duke

What's it worth?
Goin by what gets sold for similar 20k would be cheap, 25k probably the norm, with the condition and the fruit on it.

Mods?
I don't think you'd really need any.

Depends what you want to do.
Muddies will make a major difference, chip and intercooler upgrade, maybe difflocks if you want to get excited.I wouldn't bother with a lift, but its pretty easy to do a 2 inch.

140k is really not much kms for a TD5 of that age.
If it's been well serviced that's a bonus.
Have a look at the books and see where it was serviced.
It should have just had a major service. I'd get someone on here or a LR sprecialist to give it the once over anyway.
Fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, water pump are things that can go at the at that age, and check that the "oil pump bolt" has been done.
They all be fine.

It sounds like a pretty good rig. ;)

He will probably get what ever he wants for it. If you dont buy it somebody else will. $25 000 may sound like a lot but thats what a lot of others are charging for similar car without all those extras.

I wouldnt do any mods (except maybe new tyres) until after you have done a weekend away camping so that you can see what works and what doesnt before forking out any more $$$.

Hi Duke,

Depending on your use of the vehicle. If you intend going on an extended trip, I would recommend additional fuel storage, a fridge and more aggressive tyres, as you have already noted.

For fuel tanks, long range main or a secondary rear can be supplied or supplied and fitted by the likes of ARB. Sill tanks from Mulgo,(expedition vehicle conversions, recreational vehicle conversions, camper conversions, land rover, toyota - Mulgo Pty Ltd - Australia (http://www.mulgo.com.au/)) As for fridges and tyres, this is a personal choice.

Another item for the list could be a low coolant alarm.

I paid a bit less than that just over a year ago for a '99 model with 195,00km. I've done 40,000km in it including 25,000 round the big island.

Main problem has been a new steering box - splines worn so a new one was needed.

I'm not sure what 50,000 kms is 'worth', and i'm not boasting about getting a great deal, but it had all the extras you've mentioned (or equivalent) the 'known issues' already sorted plus:

Tinted windows all-round
Maxidrive axles front & rear,
Airlocks (never used yet)
Luggage barrier
Wheel carrier,
6 steels,
uprated springs all round (+ airbags presumably for towing which I don't do)
chip,
lpg,
70l custom stainless water tank,
longranger tank - as said below this is really useful on a long trip, if only to skip the pricey midway roadhouses.
coolant alarm,
rev counter,
new hoses and all the old ones spare,

... plus receipts for all the upgrades showing no expense had been spared, and a fair few spares including working old fuel pump.

Been really happy with it - as i'm sure you will be with whatever you get :)

Well - I did it :D

Looks like I got it for a good price. Am now in possession of a 2002 Td5 and a slightly incredulous wife.

Took it down to Mulgo's for a once-over - Daniel and Sam gave it a clean bill of health. Very nice guys, the pair of 'em. Have absolutely no hesitation whatsoever in trusting my Deefer to their ongoing care.

Thanks again to all who offered advice/comments here. Appreciated as always.

I'll post some pics in a bit.

Cheers,

Duke
