View Full Version : 2011 Defender - needs chequer plates

My brother-in-law has just bought himself a new Defender and his wife wants to have its side panels chequer plated for his birthday.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a fitter in Melbourne?

Look for an opposite lock dealer as they do some nice tread plate stuff from South Africa and other 110 toys

Yeah it does if you don't want it to look crap. That stick on stuff looks horrid

It is a new 110 after all

Seems to be two issues here. Firstly where can you get the checker plate, and secondly who can fit it in Melbourne.

All of the information, reports, comments, etc that I have read, indicate that the quality of the chequer plate varies (eg Defender2 - View topic - Differences in Chequer plate (http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic2665.html?highlight=chequer), http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/107805-best-place-wing-top-chequer-plate-kit-puma-130-questions.html, Defender2 - View topic - Checker plate for wings (http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic483.html?highlight=checker+plate), Defender2 - View topic - Fitting Chequer Plate? (http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic1144.html?highlight=checker+plate)). The conclusion seems to be that the best is the original and quite a few people have lamented that they had opted for cheaper plate when they should have opted for the Land Rover original even though it was dearer. The OEM plate is anodised while the better after market plate is powder coated. I understand there is also an issue with some after market wing top plates fouling with the Puma bonnet. Sorry if I am raising issues with which people are already familiar.

Cheers

I went OEM - dear as poison but nice fit/finish/durability.

If I was doing it again I'd consider the Dolium stuff (Opposite Lock).

As for fitting - do it yourself, the standard of workmanship at most places these days is abysmil (at best).

I'd go (and did) the full genuine kit - so it costs coin - its also the dog's bollocks. The aftermarket stuff is just that. ;)

How much are you looking at for the OEM stuff?

Prices change yearly (and between dealers, it seems) - it was extortion when I bought mine in 2007 - to buy today, you need a fast car, a sugar bag and several mates with balaclavas. ;)

I would talk to Rovacraft. They sell the mammouth plate which is the OEM manufacturer I believe.
The one piece bonnet protection seems a good idea.

I brought the plates from Rovercraft, the Mammoth product is excellent. Fitted these myself - Wings and sill protection.
What colour is the car. You may want to look at the Black chequer plate as well.

PM me if you like and I will send a photo

I looked at the Mammoth CP from the UK ( sold by Rovacraft in Oz) and it looked the goods , quality and thickness as well as the gaskets that come with it plus the type of fittings ( I beleive Stainless Steel screws rather than pop rivets ???) Have not purchased it yet , but i think thats what I will get when i can afford it. I beleive there are a few other threads here that have that opinion too.
