That is a good buy! :D

Heaps of things to play with and I bet a few surprises as well. :p

Are you getting everything, car and trailer? :o

Yeah. I emailed the guy a couple times to get more specific details so I could work out storage. He told me what was in the pics is what I get. The rolling 3/4 is full of gear too. I had to rethink my storage location and have a couple places I need to get confirmation from before I set up camp in their yard. :D

Well....I got it. My very good brother in law came with me and we were both armed with car trailers and determination. BOY OH BOY did we need it. What the pics didn't show was the very small gateway into the lane and then 3 foot high rocks a car length away from the gate. Not really conducive to a good exit with 4WD and car trailer.

But we got it out. On a side note, I would like to give all readers a warning about hired car trailers. Make that two! The first is that check to make sure the brakes don't drag. This makes for Disco series one struggle even harder again to get up hills when loaded. The second is, check carefully the rotatting neck on the tow hitch to make sure it hadn't been bent. Doing these checks in broad daylight, would have me looking for another trailer and I wouldn't have had a River dance re-enactment with a Landy on top. It fish-tailed so badly at one point, that the Landy slid over a foot to the side and stopped against the side of the trailer.

Even after re-positioning it three times and re-distrubuting the weight and adjusting the tie downs......It was a VERY slow drive home.

But aside from that.......... we got it all back.

Today I am going armed with a camera and will get some more detailed pics. There is ALOT of extras. The front of the Complete Landy is three boxes full of gears, shafts, shims, screws...etc etc. In the back is a couple front bars and basically another cab. Doors, glass, guards, two bonnets (including the one on it and the one in the 3/4 donor, I now have 4) and a heap of odds and sodds.

It's going to take me a while to get through just the parts. But I'll keep you all posted. :)

...btw...I have checked over the front rails... and I am running blanks for the chassis number. Any pointers on where Land Rover may have these stamped...any sneeky locations?

Cheers Sean. I'm slowly getting up to speed with Land Rovers finer points. The nitty gritty, grease and grime is a no brainer, but serial numbers and model variations are still on my research list. I'll check there tomorrow.

Well.... I've scratched and scraped and there is no obvious chassis ser number. All the info I have read seems to show the number on the sides of the rails. I have checked around the spring hanger Sean and haven't been able to uncover the number. I'm sure I must be missing it... but I checked both left and right rear spring hangers and the open areas have no numbers. But I shall keep scouring that backend to find it.

But while I do... here are some more pics......

Also too, I did a bit of a Large item inventory and I have also uncovered 2 diff centres( unsure if front or back as yet), 2 gear boxes ( one with the transfer case still attatched), what looks like a 4 cyl upper gasket kit, 2 copper head gaskets t/s 4 cyl, spare brake drums, generators, 3 dash cluster surrounds. I am going to pull all the bits out and inividually photo the stuff and maybe I can get some idea of what I should keep and what I can share around.

My plan only involves the ute. So everything else that won't be needed will have to be re-homed as Space is an absolute premium for me. But I'll keep adding things to this thread.

OK...now that my bro-in-law's wedding is all done and dusted....I can get back to the Landy...

I have one last stupid question though........ is the number on the actual spring hanger is it? It's just that I have scrubbed the chassis rails around the LHR spring hangers...inside and out.... and both sides (although now clean) still don't have a number to show. Does the number follow the chassis line....because if it does, the metal white ant may have grazed the number off. While scrubbing, I have uncovered a couple ares of particular interest for a grind and fisch plate.

How well is the stamping too? Is it shallow stamping or a good hard ol fassioned smash the number through the other side of the rails kinda stamp?

I get the time to ask the questions while I am... not at home :) , so what I get from you guys, I take with me to use. I really do appreciate your help though.

It should be stamped on the spring hanger itself and not on the chassis rail

Wow....I tell you what....I have hit the jack pot. I have found the numbers. Thanks to all who have been helpful and pointed me (more like held my hand and pointed my finger) for they are so hard I scrubbed even harder on the hangers and came up with 27800373 with a funny backward 6 after it. The other bitsa had 34701187A. Does this have any significance apart from me now knowing what to look for? :)

the backwards 6 thing is a "G". info from the CalVIN web site is as follows:

Model: Land Rover, Series IIA
Body type: Basic
Wheel base: 109in
Engine: diesel
Model years: 1962-1971
Destination: Completely knocked down (CKD), right-hand drive (RHD)
00373 Serial number
G Design: Six significant design modifications
Suffix used from April 1969 till October 1971

The G on the pic that Mrs hh attatched doesn'took like the thing that is after the number. It is smaller than the number by about a third of the size, but it had similar spacing as with the other numbers that were stamped.

I have done some digging through various Landrover info sites and have found a reference to the little reversed 6... seems it is an 'a'.

Series 2 chassis numbers (http://www.series2club.info/forum/index.php'topic=20962.0)

The above link has the series number with an 'a' at the end. But the rest of the info Pop058 supplied hits the nail on the head...unfortunately, the diesel is no more and a 186 sits in it's place. OH well... at least I have a Landy. :)

Nice buy.

I see the ute is a different colour inside than out.
What clur are you planning for it, ultimately.

Bushboy
22nd September 2010, 11:25 AM
I was thinking of Olive Drab. Keep it green and relatively easy to paint everything. Black chassis and under carrige. I wanted to go Mil Spec colouring...but the wife said she won't be seen dead in a camo painted ute... :)
....but I can get away with the green, as the wife likes that colour. To keep my Landy a healthy project, I know I have to keep the wonderful wife on my team. A slight colour change is no biggy.

I did want to track down a Tdi motor and swap that later and try to find a pto winch setup. The ute has no real historical significance, so I don't feel guilty about detouring away from the traditional rebuild.

Hey everybody... I have emptied the 3/4 roller and Have begun in earnest the sorting process. There were surprises... It now looks like there is enough spare panels to mostly reconstruct a cab. I have floor panels, trans tunnel covers....oh and by the way. if anyone is interested in any dirt cheap parts from the 3/4 roller, feel free to contact me. I have it parked up at a workshop now and after a clean out and a closer inspection, the chassis is delaminating around the rear diff arches and the rear most cross member (rear bumper) is a beat up a bit, but the the tray and canopy are in pretty good nick. All glass is available however the weather seals are shot. There is a complete front end (diff, springs and steering linkages) and a rear diff minus the long axel. the wheel end and parts are turning up as I sift through the other boxes of parts. :) I've also come across two complete clutch and flywheel sets.

More parts and updates to come. :)

Well... I am back again after some time spent working on the Landy. I have finally got it back to my place after finding out that I couldn't work on it any more at the workshop of a friend. So after I got it home, I got to work at getting the old 186 out. I did find some paint I had handy for a little more 'unified colour'.

The bonnet is all I have painted so far and the rest will get done when I get some more paint. I have begun to give things a coat of body deadener after and intense afternoon with descaling and degreasing products.

After blowing away half of the accumulated Australian country side from underneath, I was happy to see that the chassis is in good condition all in all. The rear bumper needs attention with a grinder, some steel and a mig...as does the front ends of the chassis rails where the bumper attaches.

Wonder if you can register it with REMLR -after all, it's clearly marked as a Combat vehicle.
