View Full Version : Popup from aulro

steveG

I've got pop ups allowed from aulro.com so that I get the PM popups, but this afternoon for the first time I've had a popup from http://amch.questionmarket.com while on the site.

Happened on both my work notebook, and home PC.

Anyone else had the same one?
Is it a new form of advertising on the site?

Yep - I've been getting it for the last couple of day as well. Usually not when I first log into AULRO, but when I first open a post, or open a sub-section of the forum.

At least it only appears once with every visit to AULRO - I just close the pop-up window and it doesn't appear again until next time I log on.

And if I just minimise it, then another one opens.

No, all has been fine.
I should mention that I have the Adblock Plus add-on for Firefox installed.

This is nothing to do with Aulro ads, this came about due to heaps of ads on another site I visit.

Just a quick update for those of us that do get this pop-up.

If you click on the main page of, sending the pop-up to the background, then it will time-out eventually.

So basically, dont minimise or close it, just click somewhere else & ignore it, and it will go away.

Running Firefox and just installed adblock...
No more popup, and Aulro loads MUCH faster now.
Added bonus is no more big expanding mouse-rollover ad either (aka Subaru or its recent replacement an IBM?? one).

Obviously if you install it and block all the ads then Aulro loses some revenue.
If you aren't already a subscriber then do the right thing and become one to help with the running costs.

these just have to be displayed.

and contrary to what anyone says, there is nothing dangerous in any adverts displayed here.

one would think the plague was dispensed by popup listening to some of the carry on here.

like has been said above, if you leave it timeout in the background it does nothing.

anyone that has it repeating popup page after page has an issue with the browser security settings i would think.

i am constantly trying to get the advertising agency to understand how places like this work and am sure will get them trained, eventually.

and yes, i finally got to see it myself this morning, coming into this thread... left it in the background and haven't seen it since.

this is the only way big privately owned sites can manage to continue.

i generally keep an eye out on whats happening around the scene and this site is no where near as bad as some commercial sites IMHO.

dullbird
13th September 2010, 06:34 PM
can I ask how I increase security on the 64bit browser?

as if I leave it in the background everytime I change page another one crops up so I have several sitting in the background...unless I close them down

I have blocked all pop ups to this site and they are still coming.. do I need to increase the cookie level too high? rather then medium...Only thing I have ever found with this is some website don't load properly.

I'm going to try the 32bit Mozilla again and hopefully wont be a drama but just so I know I guess

incisor
13th September 2010, 07:00 PM
i have not been able to induce that behavior on my system, sorry.

running win 7 ultimate 64bit latest updates

tried 64bit IE and the 64bit version of firefox.

safari, mozilla, chrome, opera and a couple of variants of ie

i am trialling kaspersky anti virus 2011 at the moment but normally use command anti malware

i only use the windows firewall.

using full on internet security packages only duplicates what is already in windows these days.

it has been my experience that running stuff like adaware and numerous other utilities of the same ilk do next to nothing to help if you leave them installed all the time.

i just install them when i need to do some routine maintenance.

it has been my experience that some of this sort of behavior can be governed by what isp you use, to some degree.

some have much better transparent proxies and filtering policies / setups than others. it often amuses me that that rarely if ever makes the posts on specialist info sites like broadband choice etc etc

pm me what you are running and i will try and duplicate it if you want but i have a bit on over the next few days so i might take a while to get back to you.

It's fairly simple to get around popup blockers, e.g. flash popups won't be stopped by some browsers.

There are ways around it, for example if you use firefox you can easily stop many sneaky popups, and even if they get through, you can set a limit to how many are displayed.

WARNING: Before you muck around with this, do a few searches on "about.config firefox" It's sort of like the registry for the browser. Changing config settings can make browsers behave in ways you don't expect, and always keep a backup of config file changes. If you are going to go ahead, filter the list for "popups" and google all the phrases you see, but here are two variables to start with:

privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins
0 = Allow all popups from plugins.
1 = Allow popups from plugins, but limit the number of popups to dom.popup_maximum
2 = Block popups from plugins.
3 = Block all popups from plugins, even on whitelisted sites.

dom.popup_maximum
Set this to 2 or 3

Hope this helps

yeah, I understand the ads and banners but seriously the pop up things really annoy as they are a pain, and I am not interested in Guffins which until I got these pop ups I didnt even consider existed!

Unfortunately its the sort of thing that reduces how often youll use a site because what else is popping up etc? As it steps around my pop up blocker I think its an invasion and bluntly...bloody rude!

Not a popup, but there is a banner ad appearing on aulro stating
"Ring 911 at the first sign of a stroke".

It is from the American Heart Association.

I believe that the advertising agents who sent this to aulro should be crucified.
